Description
Job Title: Lead Sustaining Engineer
Role Summary
The Lead Sustaining Engineer provides technical ownership and leadership in supporting and improving legacy fluid power and motion control products after initial development. This role leads design analysis, product redesigns, and cost and quality improvements throughout the product lifecycle, working closely with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).
Operating with limited supervision, the Lead Sustaining Engineer has decision-making authority for component, system, and test rig designs while collaborating with Chief Engineers and subject matter experts as needed.
This position focuses on resolving design, manufacturing, testing, and field issues; maintaining engineering documentation; ensuring adherence to engineering standards and processes; and driving continuous improvement in product performance, cost reduction, and first-pass yield.
The role supports projects within the Fluid, Motion, Control (FMC) division. It requires significant experience in hydraulic actuator or pneumatic product design and a manufacturing background. This is a cross-functional leadership role that involves reviewing product designs and leading internal projects with the manufacturing team, rather than serving solely as a desk-based design engineer.
Key Responsibilities
-
Provide technical ownership and leadership for legacy fluid power and motion control products throughout their lifecycle.
-
Lead design analysis, product redesigns, and design modifications to improve product performance, cost, and quality.
-
Review product designs and work cross-functionally with the manufacturing team on design modifications.
-
Lead internal engineering projects and collaborate with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).
-
Exercise decision-making authority over component, system, and test rig designs while working with limited supervision.
-
Resolve design, manufacturing, testing, and field-related issues.
-
Create and maintain engineering documentation.
-
Ensure compliance with engineering standards, processes, and applicable requirements.
-
Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to product performance, cost reduction, and first-pass yield.
-
Collaborate with Chief Engineers, subject matter experts, customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
-
Communicate technical information and engineering decisions clearly across cross-functional teams.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
-
Significant experience in hydraulic actuator or pneumatic product design.
-
At least 5 years of experience with hydraulic or pneumatic actuator components.
-
Manufacturing experience is required.
-
Mechanical design engineering experience, including the ability to review product designs and lead internal engineering projects.
-
Experience working cross-functionally with manufacturing teams on product design modifications.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Aerospace industry experience.
-
Background as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, particularly in new product development (NPD), followed by a similar role in a manufacturing environment.
-
Experience supporting fluid power and motion control products.
Candidates from industries outside aerospace will also be considered if they have relevant hydraulic actuator or pneumatic product design experience and a manufacturing background.
Location and Work Arrangement
-
Location: Glendale, California.
-
Work Arrangement: On-site, Monday through Friday.
-
Candidates must be able to work on-site in Glendale, CA.
Compensation and Benefits

-
Benefits are included in the compensation package.
-
Candidates are eligible for annual merit increases.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is an experienced mechanical engineer with strong hydraulic actuator or pneumatic product design expertise and a solid manufacturing background. They can review designs, lead engineering projects, resolve product and manufacturing issues, and collaborate with manufacturing and cross-functional teams to improve existing products throughout their lifecycle.
