Description
SMS is seeking an experienced and safety-driven Production Supervisor to join our team in Coatesville, OH. This frontline operations leadership role, located on the Cleveland-Cliffs steel mill property, is responsible for supervising the daily activities of unionized employees, optimizing workforce utilization, driving productivity, maintaining a safe work environment, and supporting cost-effective operations.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure a safe workplace. Lead by example and adhere to safety requirements in a scrap and slag yard environment. Always wearing proper PPE and addressing any employee not adhering to PPE requirements.
- Lead a unionized production team and effectively manage each shift to maximize production and minimize costs.
- Prepare daily reports and provide information to management as needed, including ensuring all inspections and operation checklists required to be completed by hourly employees are prepared and submitted appropriately.
- Meet KPl's (Key Performance Indicators) to meet or exceed efficiency and performance standards.
- Control and coordination of mill service activities as delegated, including:
- Scrap unloading and loading.
- Scrap breaking, shearing and cutting (in conjunction with supervisor of the burning floor)
- Rental work with personnel and equipment
- Environmental services
- Scrap inspection
- Timely rail services to the Customer.
- Rail car repair
- Ensure correct completion of all job-specific, employee-related paperwork including toolbox talks, daily activity sheet, time sheets and designated work permits.
- Ensure employee compliance with standard operating procedures for all production operations.
- Work safely at all times and ensure employees adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and requirements while performing their job duties.
- Implement and drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including Environmental, Safety and Health guidelines and best practices, including mitigating risks associated with contractors and vendor insurance and indemnification.
- Function as part of the management team and align with core values to meet company policies and goals.
- Establish and maintain good housekeeping practices to eliminate hazards to employees.
- 5 years of management experience in a heavy industrial service sector
- Experience working in a unionized environment preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Ability to work shifts
Physical Demands
Ability to walk more than 1000 yards; stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift and carry no more than 50 lbs.; climb stairs and/or ladders; stooping; crawling; reaching; handling; pushing; pulling; twisting; kneeling; squatting; seeing; speaking; hearing; problem solving, discretion and independent judgment; regular and dependable attendance.
Working Conditions
Requires physical exertion with exposure to natural elements -- working in scrap processing and production environment at an active steel mill.
Schedule/Pay/Benefits
- Working 12-hour shifts
- Rotating schedule, includes days and nights
- Pay range can increase dependent upon experience, plus an annual bonus
