Description
Public Works Department
The Public Works Department consists of four operating Divisions, Engineering, and the Administrative Office. The operating Divisions include Streets, Sewer, Waste Removal and Fleet Maintenance. The Streets Division is responsible for the maintenance of pavements, sidewalks, snow removal and ice control, collection and chipping of brush, collection and disposal of leaves, sweeping of streets, traffic signal and roadway sign maintenance and pavement markings. This division also provides educational outreach to residents.
Maintenance Specialist I (Streets Division)
This is an entry-level position involving the performance of routine semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance, operation, repair, and replacement of municipal infrastructure. Work may be performed with some independence under the general supervision of a Public Works Supervisor. A person in this classification is responsible for maintaining his/her share of a team effort to accomplish assigned individual and department goals. A person in this position must have a strong work ethic and positive attitude. This position requires availability for emergency response outside of normal working hours, participation in the On-Call Program, and other Public Works related tasks as assigned.
- Assists in maintaining safe streets, alleys, curbs, and sidewalks through necessary concrete and asphalt repairs, pot hole patching, snow and ice control, street sweeping, leaf removal, and street signage.
- Becomes practiced and efficient with the safe operation and maintenance of all equipment.
- Conducts pre-trip and post-trip checks on vehicles which includes checking the operation of lights, hydraulics, brakes, fuel, and any other essential function.
- Attends safety training, reads and complies with all safety policies, procedures, personal protective equipment requirements, and programs.
- Assists in patching pot holes and utilizing a “hot box” asphalt.
- Performs the application of pavement markings and striping.
- Operates 1 to 5 ton trucks to remove snow and ice on city streets during winter weather events.
- Operates 5 ton leaf truck to remove leaves from the curbside. Included in this procedure is the use of the vacuum tube attachment and leaf raking.
- Operates a crack seal machine and air compressor for crack sealing operations.
- Establishes and maintains familiarity and understanding of common traffic control measures and standards to ensure a safe work environment.
- Is available for emergency work 24 hours a day, on call.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn the operation and maintenance of all equipment and procedures within the Division.
- Some knowledge of heavy-duty trucks and maintenance equipment.
- Some knowledge of general construction, particularly with concrete and asphalt paving and other roadway infrastructure.
- Ability to complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour construction training or equivalent.
- Ability to deal with the public effectively, courteously and tactfully.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other Town employees.
- Physical stamina to withstand long working hours outdoors performing manual labor under adverse weather conditions, especially as it relates to the back, legs and arms.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the State of Illinois.
