Northland Concrete & Masonry (NCM) is a leading commercial concrete and masonry contractor specializing in complex commercial, industrial, institutional, and large-scale construction projects. Our work includes structural concrete, foundations, slabs, formwork, masonry, and specialty scopes.
As a Concrete Finisher Foreman, you will lead and coordinate concrete finishing crews in the field to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and according to NCM's quality standards. You will provide daily direction to field personnel and work closely with Superintendents, Project Managers, and other trades to successfully execute NCM's concrete scopes.
Concrete Finisher Foreman Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Crew Management
- Lead and supervise concrete finishers, laborers, apprentices, and other field personnel.
- Provide clear daily direction and assignments based on project priorities, manpower, and schedule requirements.
- Plan daily and weekly finishing activities to maintain productivity and project schedules.
- Monitor crew productivity and adjust assignments as needed.
- Coordinate closely with NCM Superintendents and Project Managers regarding manpower, production, schedule, materials, and project needs.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and productive work environment.
- Mentor and develop less-experienced employees and apprentices.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, quality craftsmanship, and safety.
Concrete Placement & Finishing
- Perform and oversee commercial concrete placement and finishing operations.
- Coordinate concrete placement for foundations, footings, walls, slabs, floors, sidewalks, ramps, curbs, and other structural and flatwork applications.
- Direct crews during concrete placement, screeding, bull floating, edging, jointing, troweling, and finishing operations.
- Operate and oversee the use of hand tools, power trowels, laser screeds, vibrators, and other concrete finishing equipment.
- Monitor concrete conditions and finishing requirements throughout placement.
- Verify elevations, slopes, grades, tolerances, joints, and surface requirements.
- Coordinate finishing operations with concrete pump operators, carpenters, laborers, and other field personnel.
- Ensure curing, saw cutting, protection, and other post-placement activities are completed properly.
- Identify and communicate field conditions or concerns that could impact concrete placement or quality.
Safety
- Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture on the jobsite.
- Conduct and participate in daily safety meetings and jobsite orientations as required.
- Ensure employees follow OSHA requirements, NCM safety policies, and project-specific safety procedures.
- Identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment, tools, equipment, and fall protection.
- Communicate safety concerns immediately to the Superintendent and project leadership.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Scheduling & Coordination
- Review project schedules and plan upcoming concrete finishing activities.
- Coordinate daily work with NCM Superintendents, Project Managers, and other trades.
- Communicate manpower requirements and upcoming material and equipment needs.
- Coordinate concrete deliveries and placement schedules with project teams and ready-mix suppliers.
- Ensure crews and equipment are prepared for upcoming concrete placements.
- Monitor project sequencing and identify potential delays before they impact the schedule.
- Coordinate NCM's work with general contractors and other subcontractors when required.
Quality Control
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and ensure concrete work is completed correctly the first time.
- Inspect finished concrete for proper elevation, grade, slope, texture, joints, appearance, and overall quality.
- Ensure finishing techniques meet project specifications and customer expectations.
- Identify potential quality issues during placement and take corrective action when possible.
- Communicate quality concerns to the Superintendent and Project Manager.
- Assist with punch list activities, repairs, and project closeout as needed.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain consistent communication with Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, and field leadership.
- Communicate daily progress, manpower, production, material needs, schedule concerns, and field issues.
- Report changes in scope, additional work, or unexpected field conditions to project leadership.
- Assist with documenting time-and-material work and potential change order opportunities.
- Participate in project meetings and coordination discussions as requested.
- Maintain accurate daily records and documentation as required by NCM and the project.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of commercial concrete finishing experience, with previous Foreman or Lead experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of commercial concrete placement and finishing methods.
- Experience with slabs, floors, foundations, footings, walls, sidewalks, ramps, curbs, and other concrete applications.
- Strong understanding of concrete finishing techniques, including screeding, floating, edging, jointing, troweling, and curing.
- Experience operating or directing crews using power trowels, laser screeds, vibrators, and other concrete equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, elevations, grades, and details.
- Strong understanding of concrete tolerances, elevations, slopes, grades, and finishing requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a field crew.
- Strong understanding of construction safety practices and OSHA requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with field employees, Superintendents, Project Managers, general contractors, and other trades.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with project leadership.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Experience working in a union construction environment preferred.
- Commitment to quality craftsmanship, productivity, teamwork, and safety.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
