Please Note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience:
Legal Secretary I: $57,099 - $80,253
Legal Secretary II: $59,237 - $92,266
WHO WE ARE
The Montgomery County Government Office of the County Attorney is among the premier local government legal offices in the United States. Representing one of the nation’s largest local governments, with an annual budget that presently exceeds $7 billion, attorneys in Office of the County Attorney are called upon to handle a wide variety of matters, many of which involve exciting and novel areas of the law. The Office provides legal advice and representation to all County departments, agencies, instrumentalities boards and commissions, including the County Council, and all their employees.

The Office also provides legal defense for cases involving Montgomery County and other governmental entities which participate in the Montgomery County Self-Insurance Program (including the Board of Education for Montgomery County, Montgomery College, and the Housing Opportunities Commission) and all their employees.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- An experienced Legal Secretary with attention to detail and strong proofreading skills;
- Experience with various courts and their filing procedures;
- Experience drafting legal documents;
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also demonstrating initiative and self-motivation;
- Superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to consistently follow established procedures, maintain charts and spreadsheets, and process reports;
- A commitment to professionalism, ethics, and client service;
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Outlook and Word and Legal Files (a case management software); and
- Ability to incorporate into their workload being a back-up secretary to additional attorneys on an intermittent basis.
This position may be underfilled as a Legal Secretary I, Grade N15. Once the employee is at full performance and meets the minimum requirements of the position, they are eligible for the non-competitive promotion through the series to the Legal Secretary II, Grade N16.
Duties for the Legal Secretary I/II include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing and filing court documents in a timely manner;
- Creating, maintaining, and closing matters in Legal Files (a case management software);
- Updating various reports and charts in Excel and Word;
- Scheduling meetings and depositions, etc., (both via Teams and in person) using the Outlook calendar for assigned attorneys;
- Process property damage claims;
- Process invoices.
If filled at Legal Secretary II, Grade N16:
Experience: Three (3) years of legal secretarial experience.
If filled at Legal Secretary I, Grade N15:
Experience: Two (2) years of legal secretarial experience.
Both Levels:
Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent of education of experience may be substituted.
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:- Knowledge of various court systems and experience with case filings in those courts;
- Experience using Microsoft Outlook and Word and Excel;
- Organizational skills with attention to detail;
- Ability to work collaboratively and on a team;
- Ability to deal with people effectively in difficult high stress circumstances;
- Extensive experience proofreading/editing legal documents;
- Knowledge of Legal Files case management software system; and
- Experience following established procedures to update charts and spreadsheets.
