Job Summary

Job Summary:

Location: 100% remote (US only), supporting VA medical centers in VISN 7 Term: 12-month base period plus four 12-month option periods. Pay: 25.00/hr-30.00/hr

About the role

Aptive Resources is hiring remote professional fee coders to support Veterans Affairs medical centers in Georgia and Alabama. You'll code physician and provider services for hospitalized Veterans, plus surgical cases. The VA expects about 4,500 inpatient professional encounters and 500 surgical encounters a year, mainly at the Atlanta and Birmingham facilities.

Primary Responsibilities

What you'll do

  • Code inpatient professional services, and nursing home professional services, using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS.
  • Code surgical cases, applying global surgical package rules and required add-on codes.
  • Assign E/M categories and levels for inpatient and consult services, according to current E/M guidelines.
  • Apply NCCI bundling edits and assign modifiers correctly (for example 24, 25, 26, 51, 57, 59, and 79).
  • Apply VHA rules on billing for supervising practitioners and residents (VHA Directive 1400.01 and 1401), including teaching physician documentation.
  • Review documentation in CPRS, update provider names in PCE or the surgery package as needed, and enter codes in VistA through the VA-approved encoder.
  • Flag records whose documentation is missing, unsigned, or not enough to support the service billed.
  • Re-review your coded records when the VA questions them before billing or after a claim is denied.
  • Maintain at least 95% accuracy and meet each facility's turnaround times.

Minimum Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • An active CPC, CCS-P, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA credential.
  • At least 2 years of recent professional fee coding experience, including inpatient E/M and surgical procedures.
  • Completion of an accredited coding, HIM, or health information technician program.
  • Formal training in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and reimbursement methods.
  • Strong knowledge of CPT surgery guidelines, global periods, modifiers, and NCCI edits.
  • Proficiency with an industry-standard encoder.
  • US citizenship, and the ability to pass a federal background investigation (NACI) and fingerprinting.
  • A private, secure home workspace with reliable high-speed internet.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience coding for an academic medical center or a teaching hospital with residents.
  • Experience with multi-specialty surgical coding, such as general, orthopedic, or vascular surgery.
  • Experience with VA systems, including VistA, CPRS, and the surgery package.

Additional requirements

  • Complete the VA's annual Privacy and Information Security Awareness and HIPAA training (TMS 10176 and 10203) before starting, and once a year after that.
  • Follow AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and VA confidentiality rules. Don't use "incident to" billing rules.
  • Aptive provides the laptop, encoder, and reference materials.
