Description

This is a temporary, as needed, hourly position.  Responsible work protecting life and property by performing fire fighting and patient care work. Work performed in rendering advanced pre-hospital life support functions, other emergency care, and rescue services.  Duties include the operation and maintenance of the ambulance.
  1. Performs fire fighting activities including operation related fire equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  2. Provides Basic Life Support (BLS) care (in compliance with Chapter 401 F.S. and Chapter 10D-66 F.A.C.) according to the established County EMS Procedures Manual and applicable protocols and Standing Orders, to persons in need of medical attention.
  3. Responds to medical, rescue, fire and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
  4. Treats patients according to the standards set forth in Chapter 10D-66 F.A.C. and County Standard Operating Procedures manual.
  5. Cooperates with other personnel assigned to rescue unit as a team.
  6. Insures that proper and accurate records and reports are kept, as required by established rules and procedures.
  7. Is responsible for the stocking of supplies, inventory, and the cleaning of apparatus, equipment, and the station.
  8. Insures that all equipment is functioning properly in order that the rescue unit is always available to respond to a call.
  9. Completes daily inventory according to established procedures.
  10. Maintains rescue unit, keeps it clean and orderly, and in proper operating condition.
  11. May be required to assist with emergency support functions (ESF) in the EOC during emergencies or other related emergency duties.

  1. Knowledge of first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and the use of life sustaining equipment and practices.
  2. Knowledge of rescue and fire equipment, operation and maintenance.
  3. Knowledge of safety and comfort manners and methods in the handling and treatment of patients.
  4. Knowledge of Florida safety requirements and privileges when responding to non-emergency and emergency calls.
  5. Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, and extinguishment techniques.
  6. Ability to remain current in all Standards of Care as dictated by the County EMS Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
  7. Ability to become familiar with the roadway/highway system within the County.
  8. Ability to work as a team.
  9. Ability to adhere to physician instructions, protocol and standing orders.
  10. Skill in defensive driving methods.
  11. Skill in operation of an emergency vehicle.
  12. Must have legible handwriting.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  1. High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. 
  2. Two (2) years experience as an EMT.
(No amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
  1. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. 
  2. Current State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance.
  3. Must maintain both Florida Paramedic certification and AHA/Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
  4. Certification of completion of a Florida approved E.V.O.C. or defensive driving course.
  5. Must maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Life Support, and Basic Trauma Life Support (or equal) certifications.
  6. Must be approved by the EMS Medical Director to practice as a Paramedic.
 
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
  1. As required by Florida Fire/EMT certification.
  2. Must successfully pass departmental lifting test and be physically able to perform the job duties.
 
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  1. Emergency conditions.
  2. Outdoors in varying weather conditions.
