Context

It is rare to find an infrastructure project immune to budget and political cycles, but this one has a career horizon stretching all the way to 2086. We are looking for a Running Tunnels Lead Engineer to join the Newcastle–Sydney HSR corridor—a 100% renewable, greenfield network that is setting a new global standard for engineering excellence.

Missions/Main Duties

In this role, you will be the technical heart of our TBM-bored segments. You will own the structural and geotechnical integrity of the running tunnels, managing everything from initial parametric studies to the factory acceptance of the very segments that will form the spine of this network for decades to come.

Profile/Skills

  • Lead the structural and geotechnical design of all TBM-bored running tunnels across the programme.

  • Own the development of segmental lining geometry, ring-build configuration, gasket selection, and tolerance criteria.

  • Direct the lining design process through ECI and early detailed design stages, from ground load assessments to final reinforcement calculations and precast specifications.

  • Develop and oversee 2D and 3D numerical models for tunnel-ground interaction, hydrostatic loading, and seismic response.

  • Ensure design robustness across the variable ground conditions encountered along the Newcastle–Sydney corridor.

  • Manage the tunnel envelope design and co-ordination model, defining internal spatial requirements for track, OLE, services, and drainage.

  • Provide technical input into TBM specification and procurement, advising on cutterhead design, thrust requirements, and back-grouting strategies.

  • Collaborate with the Contractor's construction team throughout ECI to resolve drive-specific buildability challenges.

  • Align construction programming with ring-build output assumptions and embed lessons learned from international TBM programmes.
