Overview
JOB SUMMARY: The ER Technician under the direct supervision of a registered nurse participates in the delivery of patient care within the critical care environment. This position includes, but is not limited to following the essential functions. Essential functions include; functions within the established policies and procedures of the Nursing Department of Garfield Medical Center, responsibility for collaboration with the RN for efficient, cost effective use of time and equipment, provides care to designated patients and prioritizes based on patient's care requirements as delegated by the RN, an interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the Hospital.

Emergency Room Technician (ERT) Core Responsibilities
Patient Care and Clinical Support
- Provide compassionate patient support by assisting with undressing, changing into gowns, and ensuring comfort and bathroom needs are met.
- Obtain and accurately document vital signs, pediatric weights, and pulse oximetry readings in the patient record.
- Apply cardiac monitors and non-invasive blood pressure monitors as required.
- Perform essential clinical procedures, including EKG administration, splinting, and application of simple and complex dressings.
- Act as a key member of the clinical team during emergency situations, including performing CPR during codes and assisting in the management of assaultive or forensic patients.
- Facilitate patient flow by assisting the RN, LVN, and ER Physician with ambulance patient placement and the transportation of admitted patients to hospital units.
Operational and Safety Compliance
- Maintain departmental readiness by ensuring all treatment rooms are fully stocked with necessary supplies and ordering special supplies as needed.
- Ensure strict compliance with EMTALA regulations and National Patient Safety Goals in all clinical activities.
- Adhere to safe patient handling protocols, including the appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment for vertical, lateral, and bariatric repositioning and ambulation.
- Maintain accurate patient medical records and provide timely notifications to the RN or Physician regarding any changes in a patient’s condition.
- Transport specimens to the lab promptly.
Communication and Team Collaboration
- Act as a professional liaison between clinical staff, patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Keep families updated on patient progress, including communicating delays and facilitating visitation schedules.
- Assist in the onboarding and training of new department employees.
- Independently recognize and prioritize tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the Emergency Department.
- Participate in mandatory ongoing training to maintain high standards of care and hospital policy compliance.
