Carpenter I (10618, Grade HT3)

Bring your carpentry skills to work that makes a visible difference throughout Montgomery Parks. The Carpenter I constructs, repairs, maintains, and renovates park buildings, structures, and public-use facilities, helping keep these spaces safe, functional, and welcoming for employees and community members.

Based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, this position completes routine carpentry assignments and supports larger projects involving rough and finish carpentry. The work includes framing, doors and windows, cabinetry, roofing, flooring, concrete, and other structural improvements across the park system. The Carpenter I also operates specialized tools and equipment and may guide maintenance employees who assist with carpentry projects.

About the Facilities Management Division

The Facilities Management Division is a team of more than 107 professionals responsible for maintaining Montgomery Parks' facilities, infrastructure, fleet, and major building systems. The division supports both day-to-day operations and long-term capital improvement projects, helping ensure park facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for employees and visitors throughout the park system.

Within the division, the Carpentry Shop is a collaborative team focused on facility renovations, structural repairs, and preventative maintenance. Team members work on a variety of projects, including improvements to park buildings, shelters, and other essential infrastructure across Montgomery Parks, contributing directly to the quality and longevity of public facilities.

• Performs rough and finish carpentry to construct, repair, maintain, and renovate Commission buildings and structures.
• Measures, cuts, drills, routes, shapes, and installs materials accurately while minimizing material waste.
• Completes framing, wall and floor finishes, cabinetry, laminates, shelving, countertops, moldings, and other custom carpentry work.
• Installs and repairs doors, windows, roofing, hardware, and acoustical systems, and pours and finishes concrete for construction projects.

Project Planning and Administration

• Reads and interprets plans, blueprints, schematics, drawings, and sketches.
• Assesses structural damage and defects and determines the repairs, tools, and materials needed.
• Plans and completes assignments efficiently while maintaining workmanship and project requirements.
• Receives, completes, and returns work orders; prepares required purchasing documentation; and may guide employees supporting skilled-trades projects. 

Equipment Operation and Workplace Safety

• Safely operates carpentry hand and power tools, skid loaders, lifts, forklifts, vehicles, and related equipment.
• Transports employees, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies to job sites and performs routine inspections and maintenance.
• Uses required personal protective equipment and follows applicable department, MOSH, OSHA, and Maryland traffic requirements.
• Maintains clean and orderly job sites, identifies hazards, verifies that equipment safeguards are in place, and reports safety concerns or damaged equipment.

1. High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
2. Completion of an approved carpentry apprentice program or four (4) years of progressively responsible carpentry experience.
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
4. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
5. Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements may be required and must be in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.
6. Pass Commission medical examination.
