Laborer

Under the direction of the Road Director or assigned designee, performs a wide variety of manual labor duties relating to the maintenance of new and existing roads within Grant County.  The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or logical assignment to the position.

• Assist crew members in digging, filling, and patching holes in the roads, trimming trees within the road right-of-way, and disposing of any debris in accordance with state and local standards.
• Prepare and clean highway work zones, set up traffic markers, barricades, and cones, and direct traffic passing near, in, and around work areas.
• Load, unload, and distribute materials to the correct location according to project specifications.
• Required to mix and spread concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials.
• Perform duties of digging, spreading gravel, and leveling dirt.
• Under close supervision will assist carpenter on County projects.
• Perform vehicle inspections, maintain, and clean Grant County-owned vehicles and equipment
• Maintain a clean work environment.
• Prepare and submit daily reports to the supervisor.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• High School diploma or equivalent recognized certificate. 
• Valid New Mexico State Driver’s License.  Must have a good driving record to be insurable for liability purposes.
• Must have no DWI conviction within the past three (3) years.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two (2) years of full-time road maintenance/labor work experience.
• Commercial Driver’s License: Class A or Class B

• Perform a variety of duties and responsibilities in an accurate timely and timely manner to meet deadlines and ensure achievement of goals and objectives.
• Use appropriate safety equipment, follow safety procedures, and recognize safety hazards
• Safely operate associated hand and power tools, equipment, and motor vehicles.
• Detect needed repairs and report accordingly. 
• Perform functions with minimal supervision.
• Follow established policies and procedures and use sound judgment in decision-making with routine operations.
• Communicate appropriately and effectively verbally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with employees and the public.
• Efficient and effective use of related equipment, tools, and techniques required to successfully perform the functions of the position.
• Performing basic reading, writing, and mathematical calculations.
• Operate equipment in a safe manner
• Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment

Professional Requirements:

• Successful completion of interview by County representative(s) who will measure traits that are significant or necessary to perform the job, and demonstrate the applicant’s ability to relate ideas and answer questions relative to the job. 
• Successful completion of required training, including but not limited to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Defensive Driving within one year from date of hire. 
• Adhere to dress code, business casual dress is neat and clean.
• Report to work on time and as scheduled. 
• Represent the County in a positive and professional manner at all times, including use of tact when working with a wide range of individuals, including the public, often under tense circumstances.
• Comply with all County policies and procedures, and standards regarding ethical business practices in accordance with the Governmental Conduct Act.
• Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. 
• Attend regular staff meetings. 

Conditions of Employment:

• Subject to and must pass a post-offer of employment Drug & Alcohol Analysis Test.
• Following a conditional offer of employment, successfully complete background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to: a criminal record search, driving record screening, reference check, and employment verification.
• Must not have any felony convictions related to the position.

Work Conditions/Description of Tools, Equipment, Work Aids Used, and Materials and/or Products Handled:

• Essential duties are performed outdoors under fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. Work surface may be wet, dry natural ground or asphalt on smooth and/or rough terrain. Employees may be jolted from side to side and exposed to loud disruptive noises and/or exhaust fumes from equipment or the surrounding environment.
