Leidos Defense is seeking an energetic, technically savvy Avionics Test Engineer to lead our hardware in the loop test team supporting the Hypersonics technology at Leidos on various programs. This role is the "face of the team" - driving positive change through modern Agile methodologies, digital engineering practices, and collaborative leadership. The ideal candidate combines technical depth with people management skills, serving as the bridge between engineering teams, customers, and program leadership. You'll empower your team of electrical engineers and manufacturing technologists while strategically leveraging cross-functional Leidos resources and external partners to deliver mission-critical test systems efficiently.
Primary Responsibilities
Direct and develop a team of test engineers and manufacturing technologists with mentoring, performance management, and professional development
Develop and implement departmental standards, procedures, and best practices for test operations to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness
Review and approve testing and evaluation methods for standard and special devices, specifying required tests and recommending changes to equipment and procedures
Drive adoption of Agile methodologies and digital engineering practices using JIRA for task management and Confluence for documentation
Leverage JIRA insights to maintain and update the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) in Microsoft Project, collaborating with scheduling team for program-level integration
Serve as primary customer interface to clarify requirements, provide progress updates, and manage expectations
Lead and represent the team in design reviews, customer meetings, and technical interchange sessions with stakeholders, suppliers, and subcontractors
Prioritize schedules and resource allocation based on product introduction timelines, manufacturing schedules, and engineering milestones
Strategically leverage cross-functional Leidos resources and manage outsourcing relationships to optimize team capability and cost-effectiveness
Identify team strengths/weaknesses and assign work to maximize effectiveness while balancing internal growth with strategic partnerships
Assist in evaluation and purchasing decisions for test equipment and capital investments
Maintain technical proficiency with hands-on involvement in test system development, providing guidance and troubleshooting support for complex challenges
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited institution
4+ years of related experience in test engineering, manufacturing, or production test environments (OR Master's degree with 2+ years of experience)
Proven ability to manage technical teams and foster professional development
Strong understanding of production test methodologies, equipment, and validation processes
Experience developing and implementing departmental procedures and standards
Demonstrated success in stakeholder management and customer interaction
Excellent communication skills with ability to present technical information to diverse audiences
Experience with budget management, resource allocation, and schedule prioritization
Ability to work full-time at our Huntsville, AL facility with up to 25% travel
Candidate must be a US Citizen and meet the eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a Secret Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in related engineering field
Experience managing Agile/Scrum teams in a technical environment
Proficiency with digital engineering tools: JIRA (task management, reporting), Confluence (wiki/documentation), GitLab (version control)
Experience integrating Agile task data with traditional project management tools (Microsoft Project, IMS)
Background in aerospace or defense industry production test environments
Experience with test automation frameworks and CI/CD practices
Familiarity with electronics manufacturing standards (IPC/J-STD-001, IPC-A-600/610/620)
Knowledge of environmental and reliability testing (HALT/HASS)
Experience managing supplier/subcontractor relationships and outsourcing technical work
Prior experience with proposal development and cost estimation
Understanding of test equipment calibration and metrology
Experience with cross-functional team coordination across large organizations
Prior DoD program experience and existing SECRET clearance
Familiarity with modern collaboration platforms (Microsoft Teams, Confluence, JIRA, SharePoint, etc.)
Experience with data-driven decision making and test metrics analysis
