Job Description Summary

The Emergency Department Technician reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the ED Tech performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. A Emergency Department Technician’s responsibility includes measuring and documenting vital signs. They also identify patient concerns and report them to their colleagues. A Emergency Department Technician’s duty also includes moving, turning or relocating patients as required for their comfort and medical requirements. An effective Emergency Department Technician should have patience, empathy and intuition to serve their patients best. They also need good communication and organizational skills to interact with their Manager and Charge Nurse and communicate their issues to these Care Team Members.

Required License Certification and Registration: • Basic Life Support required upon hire. Thereafter, must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Job summary: • The Emergency Department Technician I report to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Emergency Department Technician I will perform multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. 

FLSA: Hourly 

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: • High School diploma or GED • Possess ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and ability to make accurate physical observation of patients. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills required. Within three months of hire date, must successfully pass the on-line course modules, phlebotomy training and skills validation for basic and advanced skills, TACT training, and EKG training. Passing requires achieving an 80% passing rate on each test in two attempts or will result in separation from employment. Maintain MUSC Hazmat and TACT trainings. Successful completion of the Emergency Department Technician unit specific training and competency demonstration is required within the first six months of employment or will result in separation of employment. Position may require working irregular hours under stressful conditions, rotating shifts, holidays and weekends. Failure to abide by MUHA policies are subject to disciplinary action, including termination. Positions within the Emergency Department require a copy of academic degree or transcript.
