Medical Assistant

REPORTS TO:  Occupational Nurse

SUPERVISES:  Not applicable

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

• A medical support position in which the individual provides basic first aid services to employees or persons who become ill or injured on the Austal USA facility. 
• Effectively liaise with the Occupational Nurse, H S & E Manager, Safety representatives and facility supervision regarding the care and treatment of our employees
• Maintaining best interest standards for both the employee and the company.
• Provides initial assessment of job-related injuries/illnesses; as needed will perform medical triage.
• Must demonstrate basic medical knowledge, including taking vital signs, universal precautions, daily follow up care and emergency assessments.
• Facilitates transportation of employees to consulting medical facilities and local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.
• Dispenses OTC medications, administers treatments and applies dressings for minor injuries and illnesses.
• Assist with diagnoses, specialized testing and evaluation of results, assessments of patients presenting symptoms of injury/illness in the Medical Department as well as in shipyard emergency situations.
• Informs appropriate persons of patient’s condition and progress and maintains appropriate documentation.
• Assists with designing, developing and delivering new initiatives on health education/promotion and accident/disease prevention. 
• Assist with health awareness programs, such as blood pressure screening, smoking cessation, wellness and related programs.
• Assist in coordinating blood drives and annual hearing screenings. 
• Supports and assists employees in health maintenance and achieving health care goals through early recognition.
• Resource for medical information for employees.
• Assist in performing pre-employment physicals/drugs screens and random/reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screens.  Also, performs visions screening and performs and records vital statistics (blood pressure, pulse, weights, height).
• Assists with training activities related to new hire orientation as relates to blood-borne pathogen and medical reporting policies.
• Assists in maintaining compliance with medical aspects of OSHA and Corporate standards.
• Assist in the maintenance and up-keep of Medical Department inventory and maintains control of medications and supplies.
• Maintains and ensures confidentiality of employee health information and records and maintains HIPPA medical discloser agreements
• Assist with recording, processing, and maintaining current and accurate medical records for each employee, including maintenance and operation of the medical data information system and electronic medical compliance program.  
• Complies with daily, weekly and monthly medical logs maintenance and distributions.  Files of medical records as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

Required
• Current EMT / medical assistant certificate or greater.
• Possess good human relations skills
• Ability to express ideas clearly, both written and verbal
• Ability to make independent basic first aid judgments
• Administrative office duties (typing, filing)

Desirable
• Ability to use PC - Office Word, Excel,
• Continuing education courses in medical field.
 

TOOLS: Basic office and medical equipment.

DIRECTION EXERCISED: Per direction of Occupational Nurse.

DISCRETION EXERCISED: Per direction of Occupational Nurse.

LIAISES WITH: HR department, Operations department, Production and Project departments, Supply Chain department, and the client as requested by the company.  Assist as required with communication with worker’s compensation adjusters and case management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit. 

Specific physical requirements include the following:

Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, nd kneel. Perform prolonged standing. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to climb in an unrestrained safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures. Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles at or below the PEL, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold.  The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
