Summary

The Registered Nurse within this Department serves at the staff level and is selected by the Residential Director and an Administrative panel after having met the requisite education, training, and experience criteria set out in this job description. The individual is responsible for supervision of employees. The applicant is hired under the legal doctrine of employment at will.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly responsible for clinic operations;

  • Oversees and ensures residents are provided patent care or referrals as required;

  • Directly responsible for the supervision and oversight of the duties performed by staff LVNs and contracted Nurse Practitioner;

  • Responsible for LVN scheduling, timesheet verification and approvals, and performance appraisals;

  • Formulates accurate diagnoses and makes substantiated treatment recommendations that reflect clients’ ability to complete residential treatment programs;

  • Verifies all medical reports and prescription requirements;

  • Communicates with outside agencies, clinics, and hospitals;

  • Generates/implements medical protocols, standard operating procedures, and other medical related policies and procedures;

  • Ensures accurate, complete, and timely entries are made in residential treatment medical records and computerized systems by LVN staff which addresses all steps of the nursing process;

  • Directly communicates with Residential Director and other members of the leadership team;

  • Coordinates and monitors care provided by medical staff in the clinic;

  • Attends meetings with other internal and external offices and agencies;

  • Meets with residents about concerns and grievances;

  • Notifies administration of patient conditions that require special care or referrals that are not within the scope of the normal practice of the clinic;

  • Makes recommendations to administration in health and safety practices of the clinic and facility operations to promote the health and safety of residents and staff;

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as with all regulatory agency requirements as they relate to the clinical function;

  • Accomplish other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Basic knowledge of supervisory principles, practices and techniques and demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills;

  • Proficient in basic phlebotomy skills, client education and administration of Oral, IM, SC, and intradermal (PPD) medications;

  • Basic knowledge in conducting Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation, and Reassessment for providing quality residential patient care;

  • Knowledge of referral and residential placement process within the criminal justice system is desirable;

  • Maintains current nursing knowledge to assure a safe working environment;

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a verbal and written manner;

  • Ability to establish working relationships with support staff, probation officers, the clients and community-based treatment agencies;

  • Demonstrates successful conflict resolution skills;

  • Facilitate and promote teamwork;

  • Proficient in operating Windows-based word processing, spreadsheet, and database software;


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing is required;

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nurse Examiners and in good standing is required;

  • One (1) year full-time experience as an RN in a hospital or clinical setting is required;

  • Prior experience in corrections, mental health, or drug treatment facility is preferred;

  • Certified Instructor of the CPR is highly desirable;

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification is desirable;

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Includes lifting/carrying 10 to 25 lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate basic office equipment. Duties require periods of walking and standing. Subject to sitting, walking, standing, reaching, twisting and handling to perform the essential job functions.
Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record.

Pass an extensive background check during new hire process.
Must clear a pre-employment TB test and urinalysis test.

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Working conditions are primarily inside a residential treatment facility environment. Individual may be exposed to temperature variations, cramped areas, and frequent exposure to dusty conditions.

  • Individual may have daily contact with the public and outside agencies concerning services available to residents.

  • Individual may be required to be on call 24 hours a day.

  • Individual may be required to work a flexible schedule and more than 40 hours during the workweek.

  • Applicant will be exposed to a controlled correctional environment; will work in the proximity of some residents who could be considered dangerous; potential risk of bodily injury and/or hazardous conditions may exist.
