Role Overview
We are seeking a Director, Engineering Development to lead software engineering teams focused on enterprise software delivery, platform scalability, technical excellence, and strong execution. This is an onsite leadership role based in Overland Park, KS.
This role is ideal for an engineering leader who grew up through software development, technical leadership, or architecture and brings credibility with engineering teams because they understand how modern software is designed, built, shipped, and supported.
The right leader will bring a strong development foundation, the ability to guide architecture and delivery decisions, and experience working with distributed teams, including teams in India. This leader will balance technical depth with people leadership, delivery discipline, and cross-functional partnership.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Delivery
- Lead software engineering teams responsible for building, enhancing, and supporting enterprise healthcare technology solutions
- Drive execution across software quality, performance, security, reliability, scalability, and operational readiness
- Translate product and business priorities into engineering roadmaps, delivery plans, milestones, and measurable outcomes
- Create clarity around priorities, ownership, decision-making, dependencies, and delivery expectations
- Ensure teams are delivering high-quality software through disciplined Agile practices and structured execution
- Partner with leaders across engineering, product, architecture, and operations to remove obstacles and improve delivery flow
Technical & Architecture Leadership
- Provide technical leadership across application development, architecture, integrations, APIs, cloud-based systems, and platform modernization
- Guide architecture and engineering tradeoffs using practical, hands-on knowledge of software development
- Partner with architects and senior engineers to establish reusable patterns, technical standards, design practices, and code quality expectations
- Promote scalable, maintainable, and sustainable engineering practices across teams
- Help teams modernize platforms, reduce technical debt, and improve system performance and reliability
- Bring credibility to technical conversations through a background in engineering, architecture, or hands-on software delivery
Global Team Leadership
- Lead and collaborate with distributed engineering teams, including teams based in India
- Build strong working relationships across geographies, time zones, and cultures
- Create consistent expectations for delivery, communication, accountability, and engineering standards across global teams
- Partner effectively with offshore and onsite leaders to ensure alignment, execution, and team engagement
- Support a collaborative operating model that enables teams to move efficiently while maintaining quality and clarity
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead, coach, and develop high-performing engineering teams and engineering leaders
- Mentor managers, technical leads, architects, and engineers to strengthen technical capability and leadership effectiveness
- Build a culture of accountability, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Recruit, retain, and grow technical talent aligned with Netsmart values, engineering standards, and delivery expectations
- Help teams navigate complexity, prioritize effectively, and stay focused on business and client impact
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner closely with Product Management to deliver solutions aligned to client needs, market priorities, and business outcomes
- Collaborate with Security, Compliance, Operations, Architecture, and business stakeholders to ensure solutions are reliable, secure, and scalable
- Communicate technical strategy, delivery progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to senior leaders and cross-functional partners
- Build trust with stakeholders through transparency, sound judgment, and consistent execution
Qualifications
Required
- 10+ years of software engineering, software development, or technology leadership experience
- Proven experience leading engineering teams with increasing scope and accountability
- Strong foundation as a software engineer, technical lead, architect, or engineering leader
- Demonstrated ability to guide architecture, software design, engineering execution, and delivery strategy
- Strong understanding of modern software development practices, Agile delivery, DevOps, APIs, integrations, cloud-based architectures, and distributed systems
- Experience leading global or distributed engineering teams, including teams in India
- Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed organization and partner across engineering, product, architecture, security, operations, and business teams
- Strong communication, people leadership, technical judgment, execution discipline, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work onsite in Overland Park, KS
Preferred
- Healthcare technology experience
- Experience working in regulated industries
- Experience modernizing engineering practices, improving platform scalability, or establishing reusable architecture patterns
- Experience leading teams through technical transformation, platform modernization, or enterprise software delivery
- Background in software architecture, application development, or technical leadership within enterprise product environments
