The Honolulu Emergency Services Department is recruiting licensed Emergency Medical Technician II professionals dedicated to providing critical basic life support and emergency medical services at the scene of accidents or illness and during patient transport. This is a rewarding, hands-on career opportunity to make a meaningful impact by serving the community when it matters most.

What You Will Do
  • Respond to emergency calls by driving or riding in an ambulance and providing emergency medical care to injured or ill patients.
  • Assess patients by evaluating their condition, recognizing life-threatening emergencies, and monitoring vital signs.
  • Administer basic life support by controlling bleeding, treating wounds, applying splints, assisting with childbirth, and transporting patients safely.
  • Perform advanced medical procedures under the supervision of a Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I, including cardiac defibrillation and intravenous cannulation.
  • Complete required training by attending and successfully finishing the Mobile Emergency Care Specialist Training Program and related coursework.
  • Maintain equipment and documentation by preparing accurate patient care reports and ensuring ambulances, medical equipment, and work areas are clean, stocked, and ready for service.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions
  • Will be required to work rotating, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Respond to emergencies in all weather, road, and traffic conditions.
  • Lift, move, and transport patients in physically demanding situations.
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood, bodily fluids, and other biohazards.
  • May work in hazardous environments and around dangerous materials.
  • May handle stressful situations involving emotionally distressed, intoxicated, or combative patients or bystanders.


POSITION-SPECIFIC INFORMATION 

The current vacancies are temporary (limited-term) positions with the Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS).

This position participates in the Mobile Emergency Care Specialist Training Program.

Program Overview
  • Training is provided through Kapiolani Community College's Mobile Intensive Care Technician (Paramedic) Program.
  • Includes classroom instruction and field training.
  • Prepares employees to become journey-level advanced life support paramedics.
Program Requirements
  • Successfully complete all phases of the training program within a reasonable time.
  • Obtain State EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) licensure in a timely manner.
Service Commitment Requirement
  • After obtaining State EMT-P licensure, you must complete two (2) years of service with the City's Emergency Medical Services Division.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
  1. Graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
  2. Satisfactory completion of a State of Hawaii Department of Health approved Emergency Medical Technician (Basic Life Support) training program.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
At Time of Application
1.  Valid Driver's License (automobile/Type 3)
2. Current Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certificate OR an Emergency Medical Technician-Transport (EMT-Transport) License

NOTE: The State of Hawaii does not have reciprocity with other States or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. You must meet the licensing requirements set by the State of Hawaii. For licensing requirements, please refer to http://cca.hawaii.gov/pvl/boards/medical/

All licenses and certifications must be valid at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment. Maintenance of these licenses/certifications and a satisfactory driving record is a condition of employment.

EMPLOYMENT SUITABILITY:
Emergency Medical Technicians must possess sound moral character, integrity, and credibility in addition to the ability to provide emergency medical services. They must have the ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations and must be capable of driving an ambulance safely in response to calls for emergency medical services. If selected, the candidate's background and driving record will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for employment as an Emergency Medical Technician II.

To determine employment suitability for the position of Emergency Medical Technician II, the Department of Human Resources will review criminal convictions, driving records, dismissals from employment, and separations from military service under other than honorable conditions. 
 
DRIVING RECORD: At the time of the selection interview, candidates will be required to submit evidence of a valid motor vehicle license as well as certified copies of official traffic abstracts from each state they have resided in during the last five years.
 
FINGERPRINTING REQUIREMENT: Due to the nature of the position, selectees will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The Department of Human Resources will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
