Job Title: Surgical Registered Nurse

Position Overview
Under the direct supervision of the surgeon, the Surgical Registered Nurse is responsible for the seamless operation of the surgical environment in the outpatient setting, providing hands-on assistance during procedures, managing clinic flow, assuring appropriate inventory of supplies and instrumentation, and serving as a key point of contact for patient communication. Within the operating arena, this position is responsible for the full surgical care continuum—from preoperative preparation to postoperative follow-up—ensuring patient safety, comfort, and optimal surgical outcomes. Functions in accordance with the policies and standards of West Cancer Center and regulatory agencies. Coordinates with Nursing Leadership regarding competencies, quality and safety, and nursing scope of practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain surgical clinic workflow, including working with the surgeon, surgical first assist, scheduler, and other departments to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of operations and the delivery of quality patient care
- Actively assist the surgeon during intraoperative and office-based surgical procedures, maintaining a strict sterile field and ensuring optimal patient safety
- Prepare patients and caregivers for surgical procedures by providing education for informed consent as well as pre- and post-surgical care
- Perform first assistant duties in the operating room or surgical suite, including efficient room preparation, sanitation and turn-over, and patient preparation and positioning under direct supervision of the surgeon
- Effectively manage the ordering and stocking of surgical supplies, implants, and exam room inventory
- Manage patient phone calls within scope of role, accurately communicate routine lab and pathology results, and serve as a primary contact for patients outside of the clinic and surgical suite
- Maintain detailed and accurate documentation in the patient’s electronic medical record, assist with History and Physicals (H&Ps), and manage routine clinical data entry
- Plan work and complete job responsibilities in an efficient and productive manner
- Follow established procedures for quality control and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures
- Perform other job functions as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Required:
- Completion of an accredited nursing program
- At least four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse
- At least three (3) years of experience in OR, PACU, or related procedural support and recovery
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job
- Knowledge of aseptic technique in relation to the procedure and operating field
- Independent functioning with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Superior knowledge of various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation
- Knowledge of the use and troubleshooting of complex technical equipment and instrumentation
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with co-workers, physicians, and other outside professional staff
- Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of workflow
- Ability to work without close supervision and exercise independent judgment in a professional area
- Ability to collaborate with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
- Certification as a Registered Nurse First Assistant
Credential/Licensure
Required:
- N. with current license to practice as a professional nurse in the state of employment
- BLS through the American Heart Association
- ACLS
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion
- Must have good balance and coordination
- Medium work – exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently
- Close visual acuity, including color, depth perception, and field of vision, is required for activities such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, or extensive reading
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as hazardous or poisonous materials
- Ability to react quickly and respond appropriately to emergency situations
