Description
Pierce County Refuse / LeMay, a Division of Waste Connections, is hiring a CDL Driver to operate a Class B garbage truck in Frederickson, WA.
This is a physically demanding driving position that requires operating heavy equipment, servicing residential and commercial routes, and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Drivers play a critical role in keeping our communities clean while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, customer service, and efficiency.
Previous experience in the waste industry, sanitation, refuse collection, recycling, roll-off, front load, rear load, side load, construction hauling, or commercial driving is preferred.
Schedule and Pay
- Typical schedule is Monday through Friday starting between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, with occasional Saturdays as needed.
- Average workweek is approximately 45-55 hours.
- Pay starts at $35.50 per hour with regular wage increases.
- Year-round, full-time employment with overtime opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely operate a Class B garbage truck on assigned residential and commercial collection routes.
- Read route sheets, follow turn-by-turn routing, and service all customers assigned by dispatch.
- Perform physically demanding work, including getting in and out of the truck hundreds of times per day.
- Operate hydraulic controls and automated collection systems to lift, dump, and empty refuse containers safely.
- Complete thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and accurately document vehicle conditions.
- Monitor vehicle performance and report mechanical issues, safety concerns, accidents, or property damage immediately.
- Navigate tight residential streets, alleys, construction zones, and high-traffic areas while operating safely and efficiently.
- Maintain compliance with DOT regulations, company policies, and safety standards.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service when interacting with residents, businesses, and municipal customers.
- Work independently to complete routes on schedule while adapting to changing traffic, weather, and operational conditions.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Requires continuous physical activity throughout the workday, including climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, reaching, and walking on uneven surfaces.
- Regularly lift, push, pull, and move materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Enter and exit the truck cab repeatedly throughout the route.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, wind, heat, cold, and varying temperatures common in the Pacific Northwest.
- Frequent exposure to noise, dust, odors, vibration, moving mechanical parts, and municipal solid waste.
- Must work safely in residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, transfer stations, disposal facilities, and other active operational environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Class B CDL with Air Brake Endorsement required.
- At least one year of experience operating commercial vehicles.
- Waste industry, sanitation, garbage truck, recycling, dump truck, construction hauling, or route-driving experience preferred.
- Ability to read, write, communicate, and comprehend English.
- Ability to meet DOT requirements and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Knowledge of vehicle systems sufficient to perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Ability to work overtime and occasional Saturdays as business needs require.
