Cancer Service, Oncology/Haematology & Aseptic Compounding    

Full Time 35 hours | Permanent Post

The Advanced Specialist Pharmacist will be responsible for the following:

  • Assisting in the supply of oncology drugs, pharmaceuticals and related items to the Oncology wards and assisting the Chief II Oncology Pharmacist in supervising the day-to-day management of the  pharmacy compounding unit workload.
  • Oversee the preparation, checking, release, and supply of aseptically prepared medicines, maintaining the highest standards of patient safety.
  • SACT prescription verification and worksheet generation
  • Provide expert advice on Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT).
  • Delivering a clinical pharmacy service to the Oncology ward. This will involve patient medication review, prescription monitoring, participation in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Assisting in Pharmacy participation in clinical trials, expanded access programmes  and research.
  • Assisting in the provision of information on medicines to patients and staff.
  • Promoting high-quality cost-effective prescribing.
  • Assisting in the analysis and reporting of drug expenditure in the oncology area.
  • Supervising and managing any Pharmacist and other staff assigned to him / her
  • Provide clinical leadership and act as a specialist resource for pharmacists, technicians, students, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
  • Support supervision, training, and professional development of pharmacy staff.
  • Deliver education and training sessions for pharmacists, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support configuration, testing, validation, and implementation of pharmacy software solutions, including aseptic compounding systems, electronic prescribing systems, workflow management tools, and inventory systems.
  • Support staff training and adoption of new digital systems and technologies within aseptic services.
  • Assisting the Chief II Oncology Pharmacist in the development and improvement of the Pharmacy Oncology service.
  • Deputising for the Chief II Oncology Pharmacist in his/her absence and perform the operational duties assigned to that position
  • Promote compliance with relevant healthcare standards including HIQA, JCI, ASCO, medication safety standards, and professional regulations.
  • Participating in the development and ongoing revision of policies, procedures and guidelines relating to oncology/haematology drug therapy.
  • Participate in risk management, incident reporting, service evaluation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to formulary development, medicines management, and service planning.
  • Undertaking continuing professional education and training as necessary to maintain a high level of competency in carrying out the tasks required.
  • To be familiar with all policies and procedures relating to the practice of pharmacy in the BSH, Cork.
  • To co-operate with and assist the Chief II Oncology Pharmacist in the performance of his/her duties and responsibilities as required.
  • To perform other such duties appropriate to the position as may be assigned to him/her from time to time.

The ideal candidate will on the closing date of application for this position:

Degree in Pharmacy Be registered in the Register of Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland for Ireland, or be entitled to be so registered.

3. (A)Possess a Level 9 or higher post registration, postgraduate qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) maintained by Quality and Qualifications Ireland, in an area relevant to the role OR Possess a relevant qualification at least equivalent to (ii) above and 4 years post registration hospital experience, of which at least 2 years[1] must be in the relevant specialty demonstrating the required level of specialist practice OR 3(b)Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) including relevant courses in an area relevant to the role AND 5 years post registration hospital experience of which at least 3 years[2] must be in the relevant specialty demonstrating the required level of specialist practice
