Job Description
As a Researcher, Communications Hardware, you will be part of Rockwell Automation's Milwaukee Advanced Technology (AT) research team. AT is Rockwell Automation's centralized corporate research team under the office of the CTO. This requisition allows for multiple seniority levels depending on your prior experience and how well it aligns with this role.
As an embedded communications researcher, you will contribute to or lead communications-related research projects that de-risk or provide solutions for near-term or future business needs. Projects may cover a wide variety of topics involving physical layer communications, embedded systems (typically with ARM microcontrollers or microprocessors), and possibly functional safety systems. You should have a good understanding of embedded systems and electrical hardware. You should also have a solid understanding of Ethernet- and serial-based communications.
You should have experience creating detailed technical documentation and enjoy solving multi-disciplinary engineering problems that require diverse expertise. Continuous learning is a requirement. You should already understand research processes and have initiative to seek answers independently. You will report to the Milwaukee, Wisconsin laboratory manager. You will work Hybrid in Milwaukee, WI.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Research new technologies related to industrial automation and develop domain expertise.
- Perform literature reviews, hands-on prototyping, experimentation, demonstration, and documentation (typically in internal reports, but occasionally in journals).
- Collaborate with external vendors, research partners, and standards development organizations.
- Identify new intellectual property.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
- Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
The Preferred - You Might Also Have:
- Typically requires minimum of 2 years of related experience.
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in science or engineering. Examples:
- Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or Robotics Engineering
- Computer Science or Information Technology
- Physics, Applied Physics, or Engineering Physics
- Mathematics or Applied Mathematics
- 3+ years of experience in a research or technology development environment.
- Project management skills.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages.
- Excellent written and spoken technical English.
- One or more of the following representative skills:
- Create electrical circuit simulations using SPICE or similar.
- Develop embedded software / firmware for microcontrollers.
- Create simple prototype circuit boards, from schematic capture to assembly.
- Develop software related to functional safety (according to IEC 61508).
- Implement with programable logic, such as FPGAs or CGRAs.
- Required business travel is minimal and typically elective.
