Overview

The Medical Director of Teleradiology for Children’s Mercy Radiology provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for a distributed pediatric imaging service. This role ensures high‑quality, timely, and safe interpretation of pediatric imaging studies delivered through remote platforms, while advancing innovation, standardization, and collaboration across the enterprise. The director serves as the primary clinical leader for teleradiology workflows, quality initiatives, and cross‑site integration.

 

The director will serve as a Vice Chair in the department of radiology at Children’s Mercy.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Clinical Leadership

• Oversee the quality, accuracy, and consistency of pediatric imaging interpretations performed via teleradiology.
• Establish and maintain evidence‑based protocols, standardized reporting practices, and pediatric‑specific imaging guidelines.
• Provide expert consultation to referring clinicians, radiologists, and care teams across all participating sites.
• Support subspecialty coverage models (e.g., neuroradiology, emergency radiology) to ensure 24/7 pediatric imaging expertise.

Operational Management

• Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of teleradiology workflows, including study routing, turnaround time expectations, and escalation pathways.
• Collaborate with IT, PACS, and telehealth teams to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient imaging transmission and reporting systems.
• Monitor performance metrics, including turnaround times, report addenda, peer review outcomes, and referring provider satisfaction.
• Develop staffing models for remote pediatric radiologists, including scheduling, productivity expectations, and cross‑coverage.

Quality, Safety, and Compliance

• Direct quality assurance programs, including peer review, discrepancy tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, credentialing, and licensing requirements across all states and partner institutions.
• Promote radiation safety principles and appropriate imaging utilization for pediatric patients.
• Participate in department peer review and quality improvement conferences.

Strategic Development

• Identify opportunities to expand teleradiology services, enhance subspecialty access, and improve care equity for underserved regions.
• Partner with institutional leadership to align teleradiology strategy with departmental and system‑wide goals.
• Evaluate emerging technologies (AI tools, workflow automation, advanced visualization) and guide their safe, effective integration.

Education and Collaboration

• Provide mentorship and professional development for pediatric radiologists participating in remote practice.
• Support education for trainees, technologists, and referring clinicians on pediatric imaging best practices.
• Foster strong relationships with onsite radiology teams, emergency departments, pediatric subspecialists, and community partners.

Qualifications

 

Required

• MD or DO degree with board certification in Diagnostic Radiology.
• Fellowship training and additional certification in Pediatric Radiology.
• Eligibility for medical licensure in relevant states.
• Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in pediatric radiology.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in radiology operations, quality, and program development.

Preferred

• Experience directing or participating in teleradiology programs.
• Familiarity with PACS/RIS systems, telehealth platforms, and imaging informatics.
• Strong communication skills and ability to lead distributed teams.
• Experience with quality improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
