Key Accountabilities
Lead the Manufacturing Engineering activity in an operational part of the business
Be the overall Technical Authority across the total supply chain and product lifecycle, assuring the initial and continuing capability of the method of production to produce product conforming to design definition. Ensure technical support for resolution of problems is provided
In collaboration with the relevant Design Engineering Capability Chief (or equivalent), ensure that the method of production is capable of meeting the requirements of product and business in terms of Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery Rate & Leadtime (SQCD)
May be aligned to Commodity, Process or Site/Region as applicable to the business organisation
HSE - Accountable for ensuring that all manufacturing processes and methods of manufacture deployed within the business are in full compliance to Health, Safety & Environmental Standards and meet the expectations of the Zero Harm programme
Product Safety - Accountable for compliance to the Product Safety Management System for all products in their area of accountability. Accountable for ensuring that product safety risks are understood and mitigated, and for promoting a product safety culture in the organisation. Champion product safety and prioritise it so that safety-related tasks get the right attention, time and resources
Quality - Create a culture of zero defects within the organisation. Ensure that manufacturing processes and methods of manufacture within the business are developed and deployed to support Right First Time manufacture. Coach the community in the use of RRPS and DMAIC tools. Ensure compliance to all relevant company, legislative and technical policies and standards
Technical Authority - Specify Manufacturing Engineering and process requirements and make technical decisions in relation to the Business. Chair the Control Authority(s) governing change for all commodities or products owned by the Business across the internal and external supply where applicable, subject to appropriate delegation
Requirements - Govern the requirements for improvements/innovations in manufacturing processes and methods of manufacture within their area of accountability. Ensure new opportunites for improvement are assessed and prioritised within Business plans
Create strategy - Integrate Manufacturing Technology, Digital Manufacturing and Product Introduction activities within the business. Ensure alignment of Manufacturing and Supply Chain strategies across area of accountability
Planning - Establish mechanisms to govern the achievement of Manufacturing Engineering deliverables, report status, and ensure issues and risks are resolved to meet project timescales. Integrate Man Eng load/capacity plans and budgets
Develop capability - Buy-off the production readiness of new manufacturing capabilities or methods relevant to their commodities or products. Develop numerate, real time methods for capturing process capability, and ensure it is available and acted on within the business and in new product design
Deploy capability - Ensure manufacturing processes and/or methods of manufacture within the business are capable of meeting and continuing to meet requirements for quality, cost, delivery rate and lead time
Ensure appropriate levels and priority of technical support to operations such that the needs of the Business are met
Minimum standards - Working with the Manufacturing Engineering Commodity Leaders and Manufacturing Process Owners, drive manufacturing processes (domestic and external) towards identified consistent best practice
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing - Operate as an active member of the global Manufacturing Engineering leadership team, proactively supporting cross-Business collaboration, knowledge sharing, skills and process development to best utilise the available resources to deliver business needs and priorities
Develop talent - Responsible for self development to meet the required skills and behaviours for the role. Continuously seek to expand knowledge and experience to increase effectiveness in undertaking existing and new activities
Act as professional leader of the Manufacturing Engineering community within the business, ensuring required skills and behaviours are in place and promoting the development and growth of the community. Drive accountability and enablement through engagement and coaching team members, so that everyone can be at their best
Build external relationships - Manage, develop and maintain beneficial business relationships across the function, and with technology partners, joint ventures, risk and revenue sharing partners and other designated suppliers
Key Experiences and Qualifications
Has Company wide outlook and exposure to different challenges, cultures and ways of working
Held significant manufacturing roles across a range of relevant functional areas, demonstrating breadth of experience and of implementing change at pace
Has a proven track record delivering improved operational performance in both favourable and unfavourable conditions, utilising cross-functional teams
Leadership of major transformation projects and an exponent of continuous improvement methodologies such as six sigma and lean (Black Belt accreditation and/or Lean Coach desirable but not essential)
Ideally, but not essential, broad management experience in a high technology engineering industry
Attended higher education and leadership development programmes for senior or high potential leaders
