Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Principal for our London office. This position will be in one of our engineering practices. As a Principal, you will play a significant role in developing new business opportunities, expanding client relationships, and growing Exponent’s presence across the defence and security sector in the UK and internationally. This role will involve leveraging your expertise, industry relationships, and market knowledge to identify and secure new opportunities, lead complex client engagements, and support the growth of Exponent’s multidisciplinary consulting capabilities. In addition, you will contribute to the development of staff, foster collaboration across practices, and help strengthen Exponent’s reputation as a trusted advisor to government and private sector clients. 

You will be responsible for

• Identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities, and promoting Exponent through industry, legal, government, defence, security, and other relevant client contacts 
• Building and expanding Exponent’s consulting work with government and private sector clients in the defence and security space, including through account development, opportunity pursuit, engagement leadership, and long-term client relationship management 
• Significantly contributing to increasing Exponent's consulting efforts in the UK and internationally by collaborating across practices to identify areas where Exponent’s multidisciplinary expertise can address complex client needs  
• Providing strategic consulting on complex matters requiring trusted strategic guidance, sound judgement, and multidisciplinary collaboration 
• Bringing advanced and insightful solutions to clients in your recognized areas of expertise, particularly where complex engineering, operational, programme, commercial, and transformation challenges require multidisciplinary perspectives and strategic thinking 
• Providing project management and project budget oversight, including planning, resourcing, quality, and delivery of complex consulting engagements 
• Maintaining and growing trusted relationships with existing clients by delivering high-quality work, anticipating future needs, and serving as a strategic advisor 
• Building, managing, and supporting multidisciplinary teams, fostering a collaborative environment, and helping technical staff grow as future consultants and leaders 
• Developing and mentoring staff in both technical and business areas 

You will have the following skills and qualifications

• M.Sc. in an engineering, scientific, or related discipline 
• Significant business development experience with a proven track record of identifying, pursuing, and securing consulting opportunities, particularly with defence, security, government, or similarly complex clients
• Demonstrated ability to build and grow a consulting business area, develop major client accounts, and lead strategic bids or pursuits 
• Ability to attract projects to support full-time staff and to manage and develop a group of highly motivated individuals 
• Experience leading complex consulting engagements, including project management, budget oversight, client relationship management, and delivery under high levels of scrutiny 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently or in multidisciplinary teams 
• Proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop technical staff, including supporting their professional growth and ability to contribute to client work and business development 
• A proven record of dedication to quality and accuracy
