POSITION: Dental Therapist or Advanced Dental Therapist
LOCATION: Red Cliff Community Health Center
PROGRAM: Health Division
WAGE: Negotiable per hour
SUPERVISOR: Dental Director
THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION
JOB SUMMARY: Dental therapists in Wisconsin are licensed mid-level oral health providers who work under dentist supervision to deliver routine dental care, preventive services, and education, particularly in underserved communities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducting oral examinations and assessing patient dental health
- Preparing and filling cavities to treat dental decay
- Performing simple tooth extractions when necessary
- Fitting temporary crowns and other basic restorative procedures.
- Providing preventive care and oral health education to patients
- Assess and treat periodontal disease
- Participating in outreach programs in schools, remote clinics, and senior care facilities to improve access to dental care
- Working as part of a dentist-led team, collaborating with dental hygienists and dental assistants to increase clinic efficiency and allow dentists to focus on complex procedures
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving as related to the scope of dental therapy practice
- Recognize abnormal conditions to ensure the health status of patients is not compromised by the dental therapy interventions
- Implement therapeutic and preventative services
- Communicate effectively with patients and members of the health care team to provide safe and effective oral health services
- Apply ethical decision-making, professional responsibility, and legal and regulatory concepts to oral health care services
- Provide oral health care within the scope of dental therapy to patients in all stages of life
- Adheres to OSHA guidelines and infection control protocols
- Maintains knowledge and understanding of Health Division services. Assist patients in accessing available services and/or programs.
- Maintains confidentiality and safeguards the privacy of patients in common areas of clinic.
- Adheres to and supports facility policies, programs and activities.
- Advance job knowledge and skills through continuing education efforts per annual evaluation and with Supervisor approval.
- Attend staff and other meetings, in-services and other events as directed by Supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE:
To practice as a dental therapist in Wisconsin, individuals must:
- Graduate from an accredited Dental Therapy Education Program, typically a three-year full-time program including clinical preceptorships
- Apply for a Wisconsin Dental Therapy license through the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS),
- Maintain current CPR and AED certification to practice
- Renew their license by September 30 of each odd-numbered year and complete required continuing education
- Computer literacy, in particular MS Xcel and Word (preferred).
- Ability to work under stress and maintain composure.
- Superior organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong clinical skills in restorative and preventive dentistry.
- Ability to educate patients on oral hygiene and preventive care.
- Competence in working under dentist supervision and collaborating with dental teams.
- Experience in community outreach and serving underserved populations is highly valued
- Must have valid driver’s license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Considerable daily contact will be made with the general public, tribal leadership, Program Directors and staff, consultant(s), and the Tribal Community.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties assigned to this position involve bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying. Items may be placed in overhead storage or shelving.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: All Tribal Buildings are smoke free.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The ability to travel and attend meetings and trainings; overnight and out of town, both locally & nationally.
