The purpose of this role is under supervision and the guidance of more experienced, seasoned and mandated Legal professionals to provide accurate, relevant, and timely legal services and support to a business area (the organisation, segment, business unit, functional area or legal entity) on legal matters of the business area.The Legal Adviser is responsible for drafting and vetting of contracts or other legal documentation from inception and providing well-reasoned, well-researched and sound legal advice under the supervision of more experienced Legal Advisers and a Legal Head.
- Provide legal advice that considers prevailing legal prescripts and ensure that decisions are taken within the relevant legislative parameters and considering regulatory risk under supervision
- Conducts legal due diligence and analysis on specific transactions and other matters.
- Drafting and vetting of agreements and other legal documents. Draft, review, update and negotiate legal agreements and other legal documents.
- Providing legal and advisory support to business area.
- Interacting with business area leaders and stakeholders at all levels.
- Identify room for improvement or relevant innovative solutions in relation to all activities within his/her scope of work.
- Stay up to date with developments in statutory and common law in relation to the individuals area of practice and employer.
- Comply with all professional and ethical standards relevant to in-house legal Advisers.
- Proactively identify and communicate current and anticipated legal issues/risks.
- Propose techniques to mitigate legal risks
- Monitoring compliance with legal and statutory requirements related to legal risks of the organisation
- Proactively utilise legal and other technology in the execution of his/her work.
Experience and Knowledge Requirements
- Experience within a regulated financial services environment would be advantageous.
- Exposure to legal matters relating to payment systems, financial services regulation, contractual arrangements with financial institutions, technology service providers, data privacy, and product commercialisation.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and balancing strategic legal advisory responsibilities with operational requirements.
- Experience supporting multiple business areas and stakeholders across jurisdictions, with exposure to cross-border legal and regulatory matters being advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
In addition to providing legal advisory and contract management support, the successful candidate will:
- Provide legal advice and support on matters relating to payment systems, financial institutions, regulatory requirements, technology service providers, data privacy, and product commercialisation.
- Support legal matters across multiple jurisdictions, including South Africa and Namibia, ensuring compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the end-to-end contract lifecycle, including contract administration, tracking, and record management.
- Maintain legal matter registers, trackers, and reporting mechanisms to ensure appropriate oversight and governance.
- Coordinate agreement execution processes and maintain accurate records of executed agreements.
- Manage external legal counsel instructions, matter coordination, and invoice administration.
- Maintain legal repositories, templates, and legal knowledge management resources.
- Support governance, risk, and committee reporting requirements through the preparation of legal updates, reports, and supporting documentation.
- Contribute to both strategic initiatives and day-to-day operational activities within a lean legal function, supporting the evolving needs of the business.
- Ability to thrive in a lean, high-performing environment, demonstrating agility, sound judgement, adaptability, and the ability to manage competing priorities while delivering practical, business-focused legal solutions.
