What are Trust Fund Positions?
Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. This position is located in Reference Services, Archives of American Art (AAA), Office of the Under Secretary for Museums and Culture (OUSMC), Smithsonian Institution (SI).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Education Program Design and Development (50%)
- Assists in the development and implementation of educational programs for learners of all ages, with a focus on professional development programs for undergraduate faculty. Collaborates with the Head of Reference Services, unit leadership, and other departments to ensure programs align with organizational goals and priorities. Applies knowledge of archival, library, and museum environments when supporting the integration of digital and in-person learning experiences.
- Participates in planning discussions to identify relevant program topics and potential partnerships. Contributes to outreach and marketing efforts, including assisting with participant recruitment and audience engagement activities. Supports the development of program goals, success metrics, and evaluation methods, and helps track and report on program outcomes.
- Ensures program activities are consistent with established organizational practices, policies, and operational requirements, incorporating recognized best practices as appropriate.
- Collaborates with staff across units and external partners, including K–16 educators and nonprofit organizations, to support the implementation and evaluation of educational programming. Participates in working groups and team efforts to develop educational materials, activities, and digital resources.
Education Program Delivery (30%)
- Delivers and supports instruction for educational programs, workshops, and training sessions for K–16educators and undergraduate faculty in assigned subject areas. Assists in the development of instructional materials and learning activities aligned with program goals.
- Supports program evaluation efforts by collecting participant feedback and assisting in the analysis of results to improve future offerings. Maintains awareness of current practices and trends in museums, library, and archival education, as well as education technology, to support program delivery and partnerships.
- Builds and maintain working relationships with educators, institutions, and partner organizations to support outreach and program effectiveness.
Program Administration (20%)
- Provides support for the administration of grants and program budgets, including tracking expenditures and maintaining financial records in accordance with guidelines. Assists management in preparing budget estimates and monitoring spending.
- Supports the development of grant proposals, reports, and presentations for stakeholders. Assists with procurement activities, including preparing documentation such as requests for quotes and statements of work, and coordinating with contracting staff.
- Monitors program needs for supplies and services and assists with purchasing and vendor coordination. May serve in a supporting role to the Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative (COTR) or assist in contract oversight activities as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Professional knowledge of the principles, concepts, and practices of education program development, instructional design, and learning theory, as applied in archival, museum, or library environments.
- Knowledge to develop and deliver education programs and instructional materials for K–16 and undergraduate faculty.
- Knowledge to apply established practices to support both in-person and digital learning environments.
- Knowledge of education technologies and program evaluation methods.
- Working knowledge of partnerships and outreach practices in cultural or educational institutions.
- Ability to Adapt existing program models and approaches to meet audience needs.
- Ability to orally communicate sufficiently to address intended audiences, serving as an interface between the community program and the Museum.
- Ability to communicate in writing sufficiently to address intended audiences, serving as an interface between the community, program and the Museum.
- Ability to work effectively as a part of a team, while also knowing when to take individual initiative.
Education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. Institutions by an organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.
