Opportunity Profile
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Position Title: Project Manager/Senior Project Manager (Mechanical HVAC & Plumbing)
The Opportunity:
A well-established mechanical contracting organization is seeking a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager to join a respected business entering a significant period of transition, growth, and succession planning. This opportunity is ideal for either an emerging mechanical construction professional ready to step into project management or an experienced project leader looking to expand their influence within an entrepreneurial, relationship-driven company.
This individual will play a critical role in overseeing HVAC, plumbing, piping, and related mechanical construction projects from turnover through closeout. The position carries direct responsibility for managing project schedules, budgets, customer relationships, subcontractor coordination, purchasing activities, change orders, cash flow, and overall project profitability. Projects typically range from approximately $500,000 to $750,000, with select projects exceeding $2 million.
Beyond project execution, the position offers a unique long-term career path. As the company continues its ownership transition and leadership succession initiatives, this individual will have the opportunity to grow into broader operational, estimating, leadership, and potentially executive-level responsibilities. For the right candidate, this is not simply a project management role. It is an opportunity to establish themselves as a future leader within an organization that values internal advancement and recognizes performance, initiative, and accountability.
The successful candidate will immediately impact the business by helping absorb an active project workload, supporting field operations, maintaining strong customer communication, and ensuring projects are delivered successfully and profitably. As trust and experience are developed, this role can evolve into a key leadership position within the company’s future organizational structure.
The Company:
Founded nearly three decades ago, this organization has established itself as a respected mechanical contracting company serving the greater Pittsburgh region. The organization performs HVAC, plumbing, piping, mechanical construction, retrofit, renovation, and plan-specification work across a diverse portfolio of commercial, healthcare, office, and institutional facilities.
With approximately 22 office employees and 45 field personnel, the company combines the capabilities of a well-established contractor with the agility and accessibility of a privately held business. The company maintains a reputation for quality execution, strong customer relationships, and a practical, team-focused approach to project delivery.
A defining feature of the organization is its culture. Unlike highly structured corporate organizations, the company operates with a family-oriented philosophy that emphasizes flexibility, accountability, communication, and ownership. Employees are trusted to manage their responsibilities, perform at a high level, and contribute to the overall success of the business. Team members enjoy direct access to leadership, collaborative support from multiple departments, and the opportunity to influence the future direction of the organization.
The company is also undergoing a planned leadership transition, creating significant opportunities for ambitious professionals who want to build a long-term career and participate in the next chapter of the business.
The Boss:
This position reports directly to the company President, a respected industry veteran with more than 25 years of service to the organization.
The President’s career reflects the type of advancement opportunity available within the company. Beginning as a service technician, he progressed through increasingly responsible roles including Service Superintendent, Service Manager, Vice President of Operations, and ultimately President. His hands-on experience throughout virtually every level of the business has given him a practical and highly operational leadership style.
He values responsiveness, accountability, communication, and customer service above all else. He believes successful project managers stay connected to their projects, actively communicate with customers and internal teams, visit jobsites regularly, and provide timely project updates. He is passionate about developing future leaders and recognizes the importance of succession planning as the organization prepares for the next generation of leadership.
Candidates joining the company will benefit from direct interaction with executive leadership, exposure to company operations, and the opportunity to learn from a leader who has successfully built his career from the field into executive leadership.
The Position:
The Project Manager / Senior Project Manager will oversee multiple HVAC, plumbing, piping, and mechanical construction projects while serving as the primary point of coordination between customers, subcontractors, field personnel, vendors, accounting, and internal stakeholders.
This role requires a combination of technical understanding, strong communication skills, financial management capabilities, and leadership. The successful candidate must be capable of managing project execution while proactively identifying opportunities to improve project performance, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
Depending on experience level, the individual may also provide mentorship and guidance to other project managers and become increasingly involved in operational leadership initiatives.
