Description

The Bemis Public Library is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and community-minded professional to serve as a Library Supervisor. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a dedicated team and shape innovative, inclusive library services for children, teens, and families in the library’s Youth Services Division.

 

This Library Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Youth Services division and provide leadership, supervision, and professional support to a team of five staff members (4.5 FTE). This position helps ensure that young people and their families have access to welcoming spaces, outstanding collections, engaging programs, and exceptional customer service.

 

As a member of the Library’s Leadership Team, this position works closely with the Library Director and fellow supervisors to coordinate library-wide initiatives, strengthen operations, and help advance the Library’s mission and services.

 

The ideal candidate is an approachable, thoughtful leader who understands the important role public libraries play in the lives of young people and families. Successful candidates will bring strong knowledge of public library principles and best practices, particularly in youth and family services, along with the ability to turn ideas into effective programs, services, and operations.

Hiring pay range $77,235 - $81,300 per year

 

This full-time position is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

 

Work Schedule: This position is budgeted for 40 hours per week, typically scheduled Monday through Friday during daytime business hours, though responsibilities may occasionally require work during evenings or weekends.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provides leadership and support to the Youth Services division, consisting of 5 staff (4.5 FTE). This includes but is not limited to:
    • Performing all personnel actions such as recruitment, hiring, onboarding, goal-setting, coaching, performance evaluation, conflict resolution, discipline and termination.
    • Assigning work of division staff and coordinating staff schedules.
    • Planning and facilitating regular division team meetings.
    • Providing or arranging for training and professional development for staff.
  • Oversees operations of the Youth Services division, participating directly as situations may require. These include but are not limited to:
    • planning, developing, and implementing a broad range of educational programs and events and resource collections for youth and families;
    • assisting patrons in navigating and accessing library services and resources;
    • participating in outreach activities to expand the reach or visibility of library services in the local community.
  • Evaluates and, as necessary, refines or eliminates, processes and procedures of the Youth Services division.
  • Administers division budget, and plans for division budget needs in coordination with Library Director.
  • Interprets Library and city policies for patrons and staff.
  • May represent the Library and/or the Youth Services division to external organizations and on committees internal or external to the city.
  • Serves as a point of contact for vendors related to equipment, systems, and services utilized by the Circulation division.
  • Prepares written or oral reports on the activities of the Youth Services division.
  • Participates on the Library’s Leadership Team with the Library Director, Business Support Specialist, and other division supervisors; and works with said colleagues to coordinate Library-wide efforts and operations.
  • Maintains current awareness of developments in the field of library services for youth and families through ongoing professional development, and participation in relevant professional associations.
  • May be assigned/delegated certain functions of Library Director in their absence.
  • Performs other duties, assignments, and projects as required.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science with emphasis or coursework in children’s and young adult literature, general management, library management, and/or personnel management; and
  • Five (5) years of work experience in a public library including at least two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

  • Solid knowledge of public library principles and industry best practices, particularly those related to services for youth and families.

  • Ability to mediate and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, and to communicate with others effectively and courteously.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to translate information into effective written materials including reports, policies, procedures, and other such documents.
  • Effective records management and organizational skill.
  • Ability to operate computer equipment to perform work tasks and retrieve information.
  • Ability to exchange information with others and to develop and present recommendations.
  • Ability to plan and manage workload and determine priorities to deliver work within applicable parameters and deadlines.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to fulfill the duties of the role and the needs of the division and the Library.
  • Knowledge of basic budgeting, best practices, and budget application within the library system.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

 

Work is performed indoors in a public building environment. Requires frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 10 pounds with or without assistance.
