Description

Master Thesis, 30 hp: Directional Propagation Technologies

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background

Saab AB, Training and Simulation, develops realistic training systems ranging from individual soldier training to large-scale exercises involving vehicles and complete military units.

A recurring challenge in training and simulation systems is the representation and detection of directional events in complex environments. Such systems may require a physical signal or medium that can be generated, shaped and directed with sufficient spatial accuracy while interacting with materials, obstacles and the surrounding environment in a predictable and measurable way.

Different physical media and sensing technologies have fundamentally different propagation characteristics. Their behavior may be influenced by factors such as material properties, environmental conditions, distance, reflections, diffraction, scattering and interference. These differences create opportunities to investigate novel methods for achieving controlled directionality and spatial confinement.

There is therefore an interest in exploring physical principles and technologies that can produce a controlled propagation pattern while providing suitable and measurable interaction with the surrounding environment.

Description of the Thesis Project
This master thesis will investigate physical methods for generating, directing and detecting controlled propagation patterns in training environments.

Potential approaches may include electromagnetic methods within the radio-frequency spectrum, optical methods, acoustics and ultrasound, alternative sensing principles, physics-based simulation, or combinations of several methods. Relevant technologies may include antenna arrays, beamforming, acoustic focusing, optical techniques and other methods for achieving directional propagation. The exact technical direction is intentionally open and will be guided by the findings during the thesis.

A central part of the work will be to investigate how a selected physical medium can be generated, shaped and directed into a suitable propagation pattern. The work will also consider how the medium interacts with materials, obstacles and environmental conditions, as well as how reliably the resulting interaction can be detected and evaluated.

The scope of this master thesis can be:

  • Review and theoretical comparison of candidate physical principles and technologies
  • Investigation of directionality, beam or lobe formation and spatial confinement
  • Investigation of propagation and interaction with selected materials and environments
  • Mathematical and/or numerical modelling of selected methods
  • Simulation and, where applicable, experimental evaluation and measurements
  • Analysis of accuracy, uncertainty, robustness and practical limitations
  • Comparison of technical feasibility and recommendations for future research and system development

The objective is to identify and evaluate physical principles that offer promising combinations of controlled directionality, measurable environmental interaction, technical feasibility and suitability for future training and simulation applications.

Your profile

The project is suitable for one student with an interest in applied physics, mathematical modelling and experimental research. You are in the final stage of Engineering Physics or an equivalent program and are about to begin a 30 hp thesis project.

Experience with MATLAB, Python, Ansys or similar modelling and simulation tools is considered an advantage. Experience with experimental measurements, RF technology, antennas, radar, acoustics, ultrasound, optics or other sensor technologies is also beneficial.

Please include your university grades with your application.

We provide the support and guidance you need to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Join us and become a driving force behind Saab's technological advancements!
