The part-time Fire Captain position is a part-time non-benefited position.  Part-time positions are limited to 960 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Due to budgetary constraints operational budgets do not include funding of CalPERS employer contributions for part-time positions. Therefore, a qualified candidate who is a member of CalPERS from current or past employment will be restricted from part-time employment.

Under basic supervision of the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief, the Part-time Fire Captain manages the daily operation of a fire station including but not limited to 911 emergency response on a Type 1 Paramedic Engine (within our city and mutual aid), training, vehicle maintenance, and facilities maintenance.

• Maintain records and prepare reports
• Safely and effectively operate a variety of firefighting equipment and apparatus in emergency conditions
• Appropriately deal with members of the public in emergency and non-emergency situations
• Assist in the resolution of personnel matters


Ability to:
• Lead firefighters effectively and maintain discipline
• Analyze fire and driving situations and adopt effective courses of action
• Understand and interpret laws and regulations; follow oral and written instructions.

Knowledge of:
• Principles and practices of firefighting and fire inspection
• Rules and regulations of La Habra Heights Fire Department
• Operation and maintenance of apparatus and equipment
• Principles of fire company management
• Principles and practices of training fire personnelPhysical Demands and Working Environment
Due to the varied and unpredictable nature of firefighting and public safety, Captains may be required to perform the following and more: lifting, pulling, walking, running, jumping, reaching, prolonged sitting, standing, repetitive hand movements, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
