About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking applications for a Lecturer in Coastal Oceanography. The primary function of this position is to undertake research and teaching in the field of marine geoscience while also making a significant collaborative contribution to research that complements the current coastal and marine research in the School of Geosciences. Fieldwork experience is essential. A research profile that demonstrates a potential connection towards external collaboration with industry and government is desirable.

The position has responsibility for teaching courses in new and existing curricula at the undergraduate and postgraduate level under the broad theme of coastal and marine geoscience. The applicant will be expected to teach fundamental and advanced concepts in coastal oceanography effectively in the classroom, field and laboratory, supported by digital-based approaches including virtual training and teaching.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • deliver high-quality teaching in coastal oceanography, spanning the full range of coastal systems including coral reefs, and environmental change, with particular emphasis on i) the interplay between coastal processes and large-scale oceanographic drivers, or ii) ecomorphodynamics and biogeomorphological processes
  • teach in cross-disciplinary settings and across undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels, in classroom, field and laboratory environments
  • design and deliver engaging educational programs and learning experiences that respond to student needs and meet curriculum requirements
  • lead fieldtrips and undertake fieldwork, particularly at One Tree Island Research Station, where your responsibilities will include boat driving, collection of field data and instrument deployment to enrich teaching and training
  • develop a research profile appropriate to career stage and opportunity, evidenced through high-quality publications
  • contribute effectively to administrative and service activities across the School
  • foster a positive, inclusive and collaborative workplace culture
  • support the strategic direction of the School, Faculty and University.

The School of Geosciences at the University of Sydney is a dynamic and collegial multi-disciplinary community of scholars and students encompassing the fields of coastal and marine science, geology and geophysics, environmental studies, and physical and human geography. It has a strong global reputation for the quality of its research and teaching across those subdisciplines. Our common passion is to engage in research and teaching that promotes a better understanding of our world and its challenges, and we address key issues facing society including climate change, resource management and sustainability.
