Description
Quality Control Manager | Civil | Northern MA / Southern NH
Own the quality program.
We're recruiting a Quality Control Manager for an established, self-performing heavy civil and industrial contractor in northern Massachusetts / southern New Hampshire.
This isn't a project QC seat where you check someone else's plan. The quality program is yours. You keep it current, train people on it, audit every job against it and report the results to a Vice President. When work doesn't meet the spec, you lead the investigation and decide what changes.
Why experienced QC Managers make this move
At a national contractor, the quality plan usually comes down from a corporate group, the QC Manager reports to the Project Manager, and the job can shrink to paperwork and punch lists. You catch the problem, write it up, and watch the schedule win the argument.
This is different.
Quality reports to a VP, not to the project team it inspects. You set the standard, you're the go-to expert on testing and inspection, and the field leadership brings you in at the prep meeting, not after the pour.
If you want to run a QC program that crews actually follow, you'll like this seat.
The work
- Water and wastewater treatment plants, industrial plants and other essential infrastructure
- Municipal, state, federal and private owners across the Northeast
- Self-performed work: the company's own crews are in the field, so quality gets built in, not inspected in after a sub has left
- A steady pipeline of work
- Travel is limited and mostly local, so you're home most nights
The honest tradeoff
This isn't a 10,000-person company with a quality department in every region. It's a mid-sized contractor, which means less support and more ownership.
The role is onsite and hands-on. You'll be walking active jobsites, looking at the work yourself, not auditing from a desk.
And you answer in two directions: to the owner for conformance, and to the project team for keeping the work moving.
What you'll do
- Own and update the quality control program so it meets contract requirements and current best practice
- Know the drawings and specifications cold, and hold the work to them
- Review, log and chase submittals and RFIs until they're closed
- Plan means, methods and sequencing with the Superintendent before work starts
- Run preparatory meetings with each trade before a new phase of work begins
- Schedule, coordinate and document every required test and inspection
- Inspect work in progress and issue the daily QC report
- Track open items, punch lists and NCRs through to closeout
- Lead root-cause investigations, recommend corrective action and share the lessons across projects
- Audit projects against the QC program and report what you find
- Train project teams on QC procedures and coach junior engineers
- Be the main contact for owners, subcontractors and vendors on anything quality-related
- Assemble closeout and record documents
- Support the project safety plan in the field
What we're looking for
- 8+ years in construction as a QC Manager, Superintendent, Project Manager, Project Engineer or Construction Manager
- Hands-on experience running testing and inspection programs on heavy civil, industrial or water/wastewater work
- Ability to read specifications and interpret contract language
- Comfortable running meetings with trades, owners and engineers
- Procore, CMiC or similar project management software
Nice to have
- USACE Construction Quality Management for Contractors (CQM-C) and experience with the three phases of control
- Degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or construction management
- Water or wastewater treatment plant experience
Compensation
- $110,000 - $130,000
- Medical, dental and vision
- 401(k) with company match
- Flexible time off, 10 paid holidays and paid parental leave
Why consider this position?
Most QC Managers spend their careers enforcing a plan someone else wrote. This is the seat where you write it.
You'll work on the plants and infrastructure that towns depend on for the next 50 years, for a company that does its own work, wants it right the first time and keeps you close to home.
I'm happy to have a confidential conversation and tell you more about the company and the opportunity.
If you'd like to learn more, call or text me anytime.
