Our unique position as one of the country's largest employers, coupled with our commitment to positively impact the lives of all Canadians, provides our colleagues a range of opportunities and experiences to help Canadians Live Life Well®.
At Loblaw Companies Limited, we succeed through collaboration and commitment and set a high bar for ourselves and those around us. Whether you are just starting your career, re-entering the workforce, or looking for a new job, this is where you belong.
Help shape the future of one of Canada's leading businesses.
At Loblaw, strategy is about more than defining where we want to go. It's about making the choices, building the partnerships, and driving the initiatives that shape our long-term success.
Our Strategy & Business Development team plays a central role in defining and advancing Loblaw's enterprise-wide strategic priorities. Working across our retail, pharmacy, healthcare, and other businesses, the team partners with senior leaders to identify growth opportunities, solve complex business challenges, and turn ambitious ideas into measurable results.
We are looking for a Senior Director, Strategy & Business Development to help shape and deliver some of the most important strategic initiatives across Loblaw.
Reporting directly to the SVP, Strategy & Business Development, this is a highly visible leadership role with the opportunity to influence enterprise-level decisions and work closely with senior executives, including C-Suite, across the organization.
The ideal candidate combines exceptional strategic thinking and analytical rigour with strong business judgment, leadership capabilities, and a proven ability to turn strategy into action. They are equally comfortable solving complex, ambiguous problems, challenging conventional thinking, building trusted relationships, and mobilizing teams to deliver results.
What you'll do
Shape and drive enterprise-wide strategy
- Lead high-impact strategic initiatives that advance Loblaw's long-term growth, competitive position, and business performance.
- Partner with senior leaders to frame critical strategic questions, evaluate opportunities, develop actionable recommendations, and translate strategic priorities into execution.
- Apply rigorous analytical thinking, commercial insight, and creative problem-solving to complex business challenges, balancing long-term ambition with practical business realities.
Partner with and influence senior leadership
- Build trusted relationships across Loblaw's divisions and functions, acting as a strategic advisor and thought partner to senior business leaders.
- Work collaboratively across the enterprise to align stakeholders, challenge thinking constructively, navigate competing priorities, and build momentum behind important initiatives.
- Support enterprise-wide strategic planning and business performance reviews, helping leadership make informed choices about priorities and resource allocation.
Turn strategic priorities into measurable impact
- Drive strategic initiatives from problem definition through recommendation, alignment, and implementation, working closely with business leaders who own execution.
- Bring structure and clarity to ambiguous challenges, translating complex problems into focused workstreams and actionable decisions.
- Establish clear objectives, accountability, and measures of success to ensure strategic initiatives deliver sustainable business value.
Build and develop a high-performing team
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately 3–4 strategy professionals, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity, collaboration, accountability, and continuous development.
- Provide direction and constructive challenge while empowering team members to take ownership and grow their capabilities.
- Build an environment where diverse perspectives are valued, ideas are challenged thoughtfully, and people are motivated to do their best work.
Serve as a trusted strategic advisor
- Act as a thought partner to the SVP, Strategy & Business Development, and Loblaw's senior leadership team on enterprise-level strategic priorities.
- Develop clear, compelling recommendations and executive-level presentations that inform decision-making at the Management Board, executive, and Board of Directors levels, as appropriate.
What you'll bring
Exceptional strategic and analytical capabilities
- 8+ years of relevant experience in management consulting, corporate strategy, business development, or a related strategic leadership role. Experience at a leading strategy consulting firm or within a complex, large-scale business is highly valued.
- Demonstrated ability to structure ambiguous problems, develop hypotheses, conduct sophisticated quantitative and qualitative analyses, and translate insights into practical, high-impact recommendations.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen, with the ability to assess strategic opportunities, business economics, competitive dynamics, and value creation.
- Experience in retail, grocery, pharmacy, healthcare, consumer-facing businesses, or other complex sectors is an asset.
A track record of leading and delivering impact
- Proven success leading complex, high-stakes initiatives with meaningful business outcomes.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams, influencing stakeholders, and translating strategic recommendations into execution.
- Strong project leadership skills, with the judgment to prioritize, manage trade-offs, and maintain momentum in a fast-paced environment.
- 3+ years of people leadership experience, with a demonstrated commitment to coaching, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams.
Executive presence and the ability to influence
- Strong communication and storytelling skills, including the ability to distill complex analyses into compelling narratives, clear recommendations, and decision-ready materials for senior executives and Boards.
- Confidence and credibility to engage with senior leaders, constructively challenge perspectives, and influence important decisions.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and a proven ability to build trust, establish partnerships, and navigate complex, matrixed organizations.
The mindset to thrive
- Intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking.
- A proactive, entrepreneurial, and ownership-oriented mindset, with the ability to create structure and move initiatives forward in ambiguous situations.
- A collaborative, authentic leadership style that combines high standards with humility and a genuine commitment to developing others.
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline; an MBA or other advanced degree is an asset.
