Description

Introduction to the job

ASML is relentlessly driving the semiconductor industry’s ongoing quest for producing faster, smarter and more energy efficient chips. We are a young, dynamic, international and highly skilled workforce creating, with strong support of our suppliers, the lithographic tools the industry needs to achieve its goals.
Are you looking for a challenge to ensure the ultimate photonic solutions in our scanners and metrology instruments? Then you will enjoy this position in the Optics and Photonics group at ASML research. You will be part of the group responsible for demonstrating how new or existing technological solutions can be adapted to meet and exceed the needs of our metrology and lithographic tools.

Role and responsibilities

As research architect in the Optics and Photonics group you will be responsible for developing cutting edge photonic solutions and demonstrating their applicability to our industrial context. You will work in a fast paced and multi-disciplinary environment. Your responsibility is to take ownership of the experimental and theoretical work with the rest of the team and drive feasibility studies towards clear conclusions. This includes definition of the architecture, design, specification, development, documentation of photonic solutions as well as communication of the results towards various stakeholders. Using your technical knowledge, analytical thinking and people skills, you will work closely together with the team and other researchers at ASML.

You will join a project team whose mission is to focus on the development of photonic solutions for both our lithographic as well as our metrology tools. The job consists of:

  • Translate optical sensing concepts into photonic solutions in an industrial context

  • Define the requirements, architecture and technology development needs for the photonic solutions and contribute to the photonics technology roadmap

  • Identify concepts and address technology maturity

  • Design and specification of photonic integrated circuits

  • Definition of experiments for evaluation of these PICs

  • Work together with other researchers towards better understanding of the technologies

  • Generate new ideas and solutions for current and future photonic solutions

  • Build a network towards other parts of the organization and academia

Education and experience

  • PhD in Electrical engineering, Physics or Applied Physics with 4+ years of experience in the field of integrated photonics.

  • Experience in identifying system-level needs and technology development needs for the photonic solution concepts

  • Experience in developing photonic integrated circuits: design and specification.

  • Experience in designing photonic components using numerical methods such as FDTD, EME, and FEM and optics modeling software (e.g. Lumerical).

  • Experience with experimental evaluation of PICs

  • Experience with manufacturing of PICs and interacting with foundries.

Skills

Working at the cutting edge of tech, you’ll always have new challenges and new problems to solve – and working together is the only way to do that. You won’t work in a silo. Instead, you’ll be part of a creative, dynamic work environment where you’ll collaborate with supportive colleagues. There is always space for creative and unique points of view. You’ll have the flexibility and trust to choose how best to tackle tasks and solve problems.

To thrive in this job, you’ll need the following skills:

  • Ability to translate optical sensing concepts into innovative technical solutions for photonics

  • Ability to think on a functional level and in design details

  • Good communicational skills

  • Ability to switch between complex matters and high-level conclusions, ability to convey these in an understandable fashion

  • Team player with ability to build network towards other parts of the ASML organization and academia

  • Self-propelling, showing initiative and drive, pragmatic attitude.

  • Flexible, committed, result driven with the ability to plan and prioritize.

  • Strong analytical skills and drive for quality.

Other information

This position is available in the Optics& Photonics group, within the Research Metrology department of ASML. At Research, we aim to identify and fill the technological gaps within ASML, extending roadmaps of the lithography and metrology market. We work in small, diverse, and multidisciplinary teams of approximately 5 to 15 persons and deliver a proof of concepts or fundamental understanding that can be valorized and transferred within the company. We intensively work together with external research institutes and universities. ASML Research offers an informal innovative work atmosphere, opportunities for personal development, and a promising position to move to other ASML departments in the long run.

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
