Successful applicant must work full time on site for 3 months or
until they understand the department’s ICT landscape,
requirements and project objectives. Flexible working
arrangements may be considered afterward, subject to approval
per the Department’s operational needs and ICT Contractor
Working from Home Guidelines. Contractors must be on-site in
Canberra at least 3 days per week. Remote work costs (eg travel,
accommodation, utilities, and equipment) are the contractor’s
responsibility.

Key duties and responsibilities
The Specified Personnel will be responsible for providing the following deliverables including but
not limited to:
Performing data extraction, manipulation and analysis activities;•
Developing visualisations in Tableau and/or Business Objects to support analysis and
reporting, including charts, tables and dashboards;
•
Engaging with key stakeholders to respond to data product change and enhancement
requests and identify and correct data integrity issues;
•
Utilising in-house developed technical tools/products to support reporting requirements; and
wireframe development;
•
Developing and maintaining an extensive and up-to-date knowledge of relevant business
rules, processes, programming languages and data manipulation/visualization tools;
•
Analysis and extracting reports to comply with appropriate use and disclosure provisions for
each specific dataset;
•
Triaging code problems and data-related issue;•
Working with IT teams, management and/or data scientists to determine organisational goals;•
Analysing and interpreting results using standard statistical tools and techniques;•
Mining data from primary and secondary sources;•
Pinpointing trends, correlations and patterns in complicated data sets;•

Leveraging knowledge of business and technology to recommend systems and process
improvements;

Performing ongoing monitoring and refinement of Tableau and Business Objects BI products;•
Evaluating Building or designing data input or data collection screens. •
Specified Personnel will be expected to transfer skills and knowledge to departmental staff and
ensure appropriate documentation is stored in accordance with the Department’s recordkeeping

The Data Services Branch (DSB) is responsible for:
• Delivery of data products and services to the Minister, Minster’s office, Department and
the ABF;
• Our data products includes statistical publications, customised statistics, management
reports, interactive business intelligence dashboards and automation of manual business
processes;
• Our services include complex statistical analysis, clearance of statistics for external
release and advice on available statistics as well as regular and ad hoc reporting services to a
large number of internal and external users.
Through provision of authoritative data and statistics, the team support the Department’s
informed policy-making, program management and operational decision-making.
About the project
Project work includes various government funded projects and New Policy Proposals (NPPs) to
deliver business intelligence reporting products for Visa, Border and Compliance business
areas.

The Data and AI Division (DAID) supports the Department’s policy development, capability
planning, program management and operational decision- making through the provision of
authoritative statistics on migration, trade, border management and compliance.
Criteria

production of a data output, product or service Provides expertise in developing new products
or data services to meet evolving requirements, needs and opportunities. Can build the
capability of others in the delivery of data outputs, products or services.
4. 4. Data visualisation: Level 4 (SFIA) - Applies a variety of visualisation techniques and
designs the content and appearance of data visuals. Operationalises and automates activities
for efficient and timely production of data visuals. Selects appropriate visualisation

5. 5. Programming/software development: Level 3 (SFIA) - Designs, codes, verifies, tests,
documents, amends and refactors moderately complex programs/scripts. Applies agreed
standards and tools to achieve a well-engineered result. Monitors and reports on progress.
Identifies issues related to software development activities. Proposes practical solutions to
resolve issues. Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.

Desirable criteria
1. 1. Minimum 5+ years of experience in Business Objects and/or Tableau including Tableau
desktop and server along with strong SQL and ETL skills for data extraction and
transformation.

Science.
3. 3. Skills in data extraction from relational databases using one or more programming
