Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties of a student worker as an animal caretaker for the vivarium.  Most of these activities will need to be done towards the end of the day during the week to allow for students to conduct experiments during the day (end of day = 3:00 – 5:00 pm EST).  Weekend feeding time is more flexible.  This work study position is great for a student that enjoys animals.  

Below are the general tasks.  We will provide training for all tasks, and you will work directly with one of the Psychology Faculty members. Responsibilities Include:

• Check and refill water bottles when needed. 

• Clean/change water bottles and cages weekly. 

• Check that all animals have been weighed and fed by end of day (between 3-5 pm).  Weigh and feed if necessary.  Details of the feeding procedure will be discussed.

• Daily/weekly sweeping, cleaning of tables and flooring.

• Monthly cleaning of some of the larger shelves and similar items.

• On weekends - Check water levels and feed animals’ daily food on Saturday and Sunday.  It is OK to miss some weekends for travel, etc. – you would need to communicate this with the lab supervisor. 

• Keep record of all activity on a log sheet including but not limited to room temperature, humidity and other relevant items.

• Other duties as assigned.

Salary and Hours

• Students are paid the current minimum wage for Maryland.
• Students will work a total of eight (8) hours per week.
