Description
About the Role
We need a QA engineer for a large, established enterprise web application. The system has many interconnected modules and limited documentation, so a big part of the job is building your own understanding of how things work by exploring the application and the database.
This is a hands-on manual testing role with a strong investigation component. When something breaks, we expect you to dig in and tell us where the problem actually is: the application code, the SQL, or the data itself.
Responsibilities
- Manual functional, regression, and exploratory testing across the application.
- Learn the system by exploring it. Map out how modules and workflows connect, and document what you find.
- Investigate defects to the root cause. Reproduce the issue, check the relevant tables, read the queries or stored procedures involved, and determine whether it is a code issue, a query issue, or a data issue.
- Write clear bug reports with reproduction steps, evidence (screenshots, query results), and your root-cause analysis.
- Work directly with the client. Ask clarifying questions when expected behavior is unclear, confirm assumptions before testing, and report findings in plain language.
- Plan your own work. Identify high-risk areas, decide what to test, and flag risks without waiting to be assigned tasks.
Requirements
- 3+ years of manual QA experience on complex, data-heavy business applications.
- Solid SQL. Comfortable writing SELECTs with joins, reading existing queries and stored procedures, and inspecting tables to verify how data is populated.
- Experience working on systems with little or no documentation.
- Strong root-cause analysis. You don't stop at "it's broken" — you find out why, with evidence.
- Clear written and spoken English. Able to explain technical issues to developers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Independent and self-directed. Comfortable working with minimal supervision and across time zones.
Nice to Have
- Experience testing legacy applications (Classic ASP, older .NET) or systems under modernization.
- SQL Server experience (stored procedures, views).
- Jira / Azure DevOps or similar.
- Basic web debugging skills (browser dev tools, HTTP, sessions).
- Prior experience working directly with international clients.
