Job Summary
Mass General Brigham (MGB) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications in our international search for the next Chair, Department of Pathology. Mass General Brigham (MGB) is an integrated academic healthcare system, which includes its two founding academic medical centers, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), three nationally renowned specialty hospitals, McLean (Psychiatry), Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and network, and Mass Eye and Ear, seven community hospitals throughout Massachusetts and one in New Hampshire, multiple ambulatory sites, urgent care facilities, physician groups, an insurance company, home-based care, and long-term care services. MGB is one of the world’s most renowned health systems and, as a non-profit organization, is deeply committed to its four-part mission of patient care, research, teaching, and service to the community. As a senior physician executive leader within MGB, the Chair will lead this premier academic Department of Pathology, distinguished by its vast and high-functioning clinical enterprise, pioneering research platform, and world-class educational programs. The Department comprises 260 faculty and over 2,400 employees, trains 117 residents and clinical fellows and 73 post-doctoral fellows, and supports a research enterprise with more than $75 million in annual funding. Situated in the premier biomedical hub of Boston, this Chair will have a uniquely broad impact, with the ability to influence patient care, discovery, education, and the future direction of pathology across MGB and the broader field.
The Department has brought the strengths of MGH, BWH, and MGB’s community and specialty hospitals together as a single enterprise. Common leadership and governance now span the Department; clinical laboratories operate under centralized oversight; the residency program has been unified; community pathologists have transitioned into the MGB-employed model; and enterprise structures increasingly align quality, information systems, finances, workforce planning, and clinical operations. This work creates a strong foundation for the next Chair to focus on the Department’s future: leveraging MGB and the local Boston biomedical ecosystem’s scale, data, scientific capabilities, and technological infrastructure to advance the practice of pathology, more fully integrating MGB’s world-class research programs, implementing digital pathology, and launching the MGB Central Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory. The opportunity is to take an already exceptional Department and define what comes next.
