Description

Laravel/IoT Developer

Department: IT

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: UK

Reporting To: Ed Haynes

Compensation: £60,000 - £70,000 / year

Description

DeterTech's purpose is giving greater peace of mind to people and communities, every day – and for our alarm signalling customers, that promise depends on hardware and software working together flawlessly. This role owns IoT and alarm signalling hardware integrations and device connectivity for DT ARC, bridging the gap between hardware and software to support new engineering requests as well as repair and manufacturing workflows.

Given the safety-critical nature of alarm signalling, this role needs a security-conscious approach and the confidence to troubleshoot issues that span both hardware and software.

As a specialist within the ARC development team who brings dedicated IoT experience, you will bridge the gap between physical hardware engineering and our operational monitoring platforms. Working alongside embedded firmware engineers, product managers, and software peers, you will ingest and map device telemetry, sensor feeds, and remote MQTT commands into our central Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) platform and DTCommand client portal.

You will translate device-level hardware capabilities (such as geolocation) into intuitive, dependable controls and visual states for our 24/7 ARC operators. Furthermore, you will drive the iterative evolution of device features—progressing capabilities from basic on/off toggles and timed schedules through to smart, telemetry-driven automations and workflows.

ABOUT DETERTECH

DeterTech is a security technology company operating across six countries, with principal UK sites in Prestwick and Telford. We predict, deter and detect risk on behalf of the people and communities we serve. Our values – Committed, Inclusive and Ambitious – shape how we work every day: we are accountable and deliver excellence; we collaborate and build trust; and we never stop learning while winning in the right way.

This is a remote role, with the flexibility to work from home. We also value face-to-face collaboration and would ask for some flexibility to attend occasional in-person meetings or team sessions.

Key Responsibilities

1. IoT and hardware integration

•     Build and maintain software integrations with IoT and hardware devices, including alarm signalling equipment, sensors and gateways.

•     Apply relevant signalling protocols and standards used in the alarm/ARC industry (for example SIA, Contact ID, IP signalling).

•     Ingest, decode, and process device telemetry and command topics (via MQTT, WebSockets, and TCP/UDP sockets) published by embedded hardware and firmware engineering teams.

•     Map raw device states, diagnostic health metrics, and sensor data into operational database schemas and real-time ARC monitoring views.

•     Implement resilient bidirectional messaging pipelines to dispatch remote control commands, configuration updates, and firmware state synchronisations over cellular and IoT networks.

2. Application development & iterative feature engineering

•     Build the software side of device integrations, APIs and monitoring using strong Laravel/PHP skills.

•     Use MQTT or similar messaging protocols for device connectivity where appropriate.

•     Implement responsive operator interfaces and control panels within the ARC platform and DTCommand, translating UI/UX wireframes, interactive prototypes, and design specs provided by the Lead Digital Product Designer into functional frontend components and backend APIs

•     Drive the phased, iterative evolution of hardware features in close alignment with the Head of Product and Lead Digital Product Designer—progressing device commands from simple manual toggles to rule-based timed intervals, telemetry-driven thresholds, and machine-learning assisted automations.

•     Architect and scale background queue consumers to process high-frequency device heartbeats, pings, and alarm events with minimal latency.

•     Build and maintain secure RESTful and event-driven APIs connecting device management services with the core ARC platform, DTCommand client portal, and mobile applications.

3. Troubleshooting and support

•     Troubleshoot issues across the hardware/software boundary, working with engineering, repair and manufacturing colleagues as needed.

•     Partner closely with hardware and embedded firmware engineers to define clear interface contracts, payload schemas, and MQTT topic structures for emerging device revisions and product features.

•     Develop diagnostic utilities and device provisioning scripts to empower manufacturing and repair technicians to test, flash, configure, and certify equipment efficiently.

•     Investigate complex telemetry anomalies, packet dropouts, and handshake timeouts in collaboration with relevant teams.

•     Provide tier-3 technical escalation support for live signalling faults, identifying whether root causes stem from firmware bugs, cellular network carriers, protocol decoding, or backend application logic and work with relevant teams to support and fix.

4. Security, compliance and reliability

•     Apply a security-conscious approach to device connectivity, reflecting the critical, safety-related nature of alarm signalling.

•     Implement strict security standards across all device communications, including transport encryption (TLS/mTLS), secure token/credential rotation, and mutual authentication.

•     Ensure signalling architectures comply with alarm industry standards (such as BS EN 50131 / BS 5979 / PD 6662) and data privacy regulations (GDPR).

•     Establish monitoring, synthetic health checks, and alerting on device listener sockets and broker connections to detect dropouts or network degradation proactively.

5. Sprint delivery and platform collaboration

•     Participate actively in Agile sprint meeting with the Technical Delivery Manager, delivering predictable milestones on product engineering initiatives.

•     Partner with the Lead Full Stack Developer for architectural guidance, code reviews, and API schema design to ensure IoT components integrate cleanly into the wider Laravel ecosystem.

•     Collaborate closely with the Lead Digital Product Designer to review user interaction models, technical feasibility of UI components, and stateful feedback loops.

•     Liaise with the MuleSoft / Integration team to ensure device information from manufacturing and repair configurations can be synchronised.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential

•     Experience integrating software with IoT/hardware devices (for example alarm signalling equipment, sensors, gateways).

•     Understanding of relevant signalling protocols/standards used in the alarm/ARC industry (for example SIA, Contact ID, IP signalling).

•     Strong Laravel/PHP skills to build the software side of device integrations, APIs and monitoring.

•     Comfortable troubleshooting issues across the hardware/software boundary.

•     A security-conscious approach to device connectivity, given the critical nature of alarm signalling.

•     Background developing web applications, microservices, or daemons in modern PHP/Laravel (including queue workers, and event broadcasting).

•     Practical experience working with MQTT, WebSockets, or publish/subscribe messaging architectures for device connectivity and telemetry ingestion.

•     Demonstrated ability to translate raw hardware sensor data (telemetry, environmental inputs, battery budgets) into functional software applications and clear visual states.

•     Familiarity with appropriate databases and caching/queue technologies for high-volume event processing.

•     Collaborative team player, comfortable working across disciplines with embedded firmware engineers, product managers, digital designers, and manufacturing/repair technicians.

Desirable

•     Experience with MQTT or similar messaging protocols for device connectivity.

•     Experience in the security, alarm or IoT hardware industry.

•     Familiarity with frontend technologies commonly used in the Laravel ecosystem (such as Livewire or React).

•     Familiarity with cellular IoT connectivity (e.g. roaming M2M SIMs, APNs, bandwidth budgets, and AT commands).

•     Practical experience using hardware diagnostic tools to debug issues.

•     Familiarity with AWS cloud services (such as EC2, ECS, Lambda, or IoT Core).

•     Exposure to manufacturing workflows, hardware provisioning tools.

We are committed to creating an inclusive recruitment process. If you require any reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process, please let us know and we will be happy to support you.
