Description

The Red Hat OSSM Kiali team is looking for an Intern with some Software Engineering and/or Quality Engineering knowledge to join us in our Brno office. Kiali is the open source observability console for Istio service mesh.

In this role, you'll help build and test features across the Go backend and the React/TypeScript frontend, and explore an area we're actively growing: AI integrations and agentic workflows for mesh troubleshooting. This long-term internship will give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with open source development, Kubernetes technologies, automated testing, and applied AI, while learning how an upstream-first engineering team ships software.

At Red Hat, you’ll work in an environment that welcomes diverse perspectives, values great ideas, and empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully. Freedom and courage are two of our core values — which means you’ll have the space to take risks, explore the unknown, and grow your strengths. But being a Red Hatter is not just about bravery; it’s also about commitment and follow-through.

Red Hat’s Intern Program is a collaborative effort between the Emerging Talent team and our intern managers. The program is designed to offer a meaningful and well-rounded experience — combining professional development, networking opportunities, social engagement, and impactful work. This is a paid, part-time internship based in the Brno office, with flexible working hours. The expected start date is February 2027.

What you will do:

  • Participate in the full development cycle of an open source product - design discussions, code review, and upstream contribution
  • Work on feature development and bug fixes across the Kiali backend (Go) and/or frontend (React/TypeScript)
  • Contribute to test automation and CI - writing and maintaining automated tests and helping improve coverage and quality
  • Contribute to AI integrations and agentic processes for service mesh observability and troubleshooting
  • Build demos, sample environments, and documentation to help users and the community

What you will bring:

  • You must be enrolled in an accredited university program in the Czech Republic during the full duration of the internship and must be able to join us part-time from February 2027 till January 2028
  • Working knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Some programming experience in Go, TypeScript/React, or comparable experience in another language (e.g., Python, Java) - we don't expect all of these, but we're looking for real hands-on experience in at least one
  • Familiarity with continuous integration (CI) and automated testing
  • Basic understanding of containers and Kubernetes (OpenShift a plus)
  • Interest in learning new technologies and strong problem-solving skills

The following are considered a plus

  • Prior participation in or code contributions to open source projects (e.g., samples on GitHub)
  • Interest in or exposure to LLMs and/or agentic tooling
  • Familiarity with Istio or service mesh concepts
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)

Due to the limited number of internship opportunities and the high volume of applications, we may not be able to speak with every candidate. To maximize your chances of moving forward in the process, please ensure your CV clearly outlines your education, relevant projects (link to your git.hub account), and extracurricular activities.

Please apply for a maximum of three internship roles that best match your interests and skills.
