Reporting to the Supervisor of Accounting, the Senior Financial Analyst (Accounting) plays a key role in supporting the Town’s accounting and financial reporting functions. The position provides in-depth analysis of balance sheet accounts, oversees complex reconciliations and journal entries, supports year-end and audit requirements, monitors cash flow, and identifies opportunities to enhance accounting processes and efficiencies. The role also provides guidance to Accounting and Payroll staff and back-up support for key financial functions.Job Duties Include
The following responsibilities and duties of this position includes but is not limited to:
- Provides functional advice, financial analysis and direction to staff in other dep
- artments to ensure compliance of financial/accounting requirements.
- Supports and directs staff on all aspects of Accounts Payable including troubleshooting of issues.
- Performs monthly accounting duties, oversees monthly financial reporting process.
- Maintains internal controls related to the Town’s bank account, accounts payable, bank reconciliations and petty cash.
- Prepares complex account reconciliations and reviews and approves balance sheet account reconciliations prepared by other accounting staff.
- Approves vendor changes for accuracy, authorization and coding.
- Prepares weekly cash flow projection.
- Supports Financial Data Specialist in the review and approval of monthly HST returns.
- Assists Supervisor of Accounting in monitoring annual work plans.
- Development and implementation of an Input Tax Credit (ITC) framework for operating expenses, as well as the application of ITCs to eligible capital projects.
- Works collaboratively with internal staff to monitor Town grants, ensure funding compliance, track eligible expenditures, and support reporting and reimbursement requirements.
- Reviews, approves, processes, and posts employee expense reimbursements through Workday
- Maintains and monitors monthly Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) records.
- Prepares quarterly reconciliations and receivable vouchers for reimbursements from the Region of Durham.
- Coordinates and prepares the FIR, including the collection, validation, reconciliation and submission of financial data to ensure compliance with legislative and reporting requirements.
Qualifications/Skills
- University degree in Business Administration or similar field of study or a combination of training, education and experience deemed equivalent.
- Holds the CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) professional accounting designation.
- Minimum six (6) years’ experience in accounting, financial analysis, budgets, etc. in progressively senior level positions
- Expert knowledge and technical skills working with Microsoft Excel
- Advanced skills in other Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
- Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail required for analysis.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment, with multiple projects/tasks concurrently, with priorities often shifting.
- Advanced communication skills both written and verbal.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Upon hire, ability to provide a Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to the Town of Ajax.
Nice to Have
- Completion of municipal specific multi module courses such as Municipal Finance & Accounting, Municipal Administration Program.
What is Offered to Staff
- Compensation: We offer competitive pay that reflects the responsibilities of the position.
- Contract Duration: This temporary full-time/part-time position is for approximately 13 months in duration.
- Hours of Work: This is a non-union position that works a 35 hour work week. The hours of work are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
