Description

The Part-Time Veterans Transportation Driver provides safe, courteous, & reliable transportation for eligible veterans traveling to & from scheduled medical & other approved appointments. The driver uses the Veterans Service or other county vehicle to pick up veterans within McKenzie County & Dunn County & transport them to appointment locations. Travel to appointments out of state must be pre-approved by the County Commission. The position also assists with special projects supporting the Veterans Service Office, Veterans Memorial Building, & Veterans Memorial Park. The regular schedule is two to three days per week & may involve early mornings, extended travel, variable road & weather conditions, & changes to appointment schedules. This position reports to the Veterans Service Officer.
Part-Time Scheduling and Attendance Expectations
This is a part-time position scheduled two to three days per week. Specific workdays and hours will be established by the Veterans Service Officer based on veteran transportation requests, appointment schedules, special projects, and operational needs. The schedule may vary and may include occasional early mornings, evenings, extended days, or changes with limited notice. The employee is expected to report on time and complete assigned transportation and project duties unless an emergency or unsafe condition prevents the work. The employee must notify the Veterans Service Office as soon as possible if unable to fulfill an assignment.
• Operate a County owned or County authorized vehicle safely & in compliance with federal, state, & local traffic laws & County policies.
• Pick up veterans at designated locations in McKenzie County & Dunn County & transport them to & from scheduled appointments throughout the region.
• Confirm trip assignments, pickup times, destinations, passenger information, & return-trip arrangements with the Veterans Service Office.
• Plan routes & allow adequate travel time while accounting for distance, weather, road conditions, construction, & appointment schedules.
• Provide respectful, patient, & professional assistance to passengers when entering & exiting the vehicle & when securing mobility aids, consistent with training & the driver's physical ability.
• Maintain appropriate passenger confidentiality & refrain from discussing veterans' personal, medical, or appointment information except as required to coordinate transportation or address an emergency.
• Complete required trip logs, mileage records, fuel receipts, vehicle inspection forms, incident reports, & other documentation accurately & promptly.
• Conduct pre-trip & post-trip vehicle inspections; promptly report damage, mechanical concerns, safety hazards, needed maintenance, accidents, citations, or passenger incidents.
• Keep the vehicle reasonably clean, fueled, & ready for service; follow County procedures for fueling, maintenance, & emergency equipment.
• Maintain communication with the Veterans Service Office regarding delays, cancellations, unsafe travel conditions, emergencies, or changes in passenger needs.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies by contacting 911 or other emergency services & following County procedures; this position does not provide medical care.
• Assist with special projects as assigned, including arranging & maintaining displays at the Veterans Memorial Building & completing minor corrections, updates, or upkeep at the Veterans Memorial Park.
• Perform other duties as assigned based on operational needs.
• High school diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education & experience.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record under County policy & insurance requirements.
• Must meet any minimum age requirement established by the County's vehicle insurance carrier.
• Ability to pass a motor vehicle record review & any required criminal background check, pre-employment screening, or drug & alcohol testing permitted or required by County policy or law.
• Reliable availability to work a regular part-time schedule of two to three days per week, including occasional early mornings, evenings, extended days, & schedule adjustments based on transportation & operational needs.
• Physical stamina requirements & working conditions:
o Able to handle exposure to extreme weather conditions
o Must be able to push veterans in wheelchairs up & down ramps, assist with standing & sitting, use safety measures such as chair brakes, foot pedals, ratchet straps & belts, to secure veterans in transit.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Safe and defensive driving practices and the ability to adjust driving to rural roads, traffic, construction, and adverse weather.
• Ability to follow maps, navigation systems, written instructions, schedules, and appointment information accurately.
• Strong judgment, dependability, punctuality, and attention to passenger safety.
• Professional and respectful interpersonal skills, including patience and sensitivity when working with veterans who may be elderly, disabled, ill, anxious, or experiencing mobility limitations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and appropriate conduct during extended trips.
• Ability to communicate clearly by phone, text, or other County approved means and to promptly report delays or concerns.
• Basic ability to complete paper or electronic logs and other required records.
• Current CPR/First Aid certification is preferred; employee may be required to obtain training after hire.

Driver Eligibility and Reporting Requirements
• Maintain a valid driver's license and remain insurable under County requirements throughout employment.
• Immediately report any license suspension, restriction, revocation, traffic citation, accident, medical limitation affecting safe driving, or other change that may affect eligibility to drive for the County.

This position is classified as Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is compensated on an hourly basis starting at $26.00 per hour. This position is eligible for partial benefits including applicable health, dental, vision, retirement, paid leave, flex spending, paid holidays, and other benefits available to eligible employees, subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable benefit plans and policies.
