Hiring Range: $27.93 - $33.35/hour

Position Objective
To perform complex and safety-sensitive operation and maintenance activities on the County's traffic and signal systems. This position is responsible for creating, fabricating, installing and repairing traffic signs on County roads, bridges and other facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this position and do not limit the assignment of related duties to this classification.

1. Creates, installs and maintains highway signs, posts, guardrails and fences to maintain safe and navigable roads and bridges.

2. Maintains a computerized inventory of signs, sign materials, posts, sign locations and conditions to maintain accurate, up-to-date, and accessible records.

3. Determines need for signs and posts in preparation of signing plans for maintenance and construction projects and for replacement program to assist in bid preparation.

4. Communicates and coordinates with utility notification center to ensure safe work zones.

5. Operates light and moderately heavy equipment including trucks for snow plowing and applying ice control materials to County roads, materials hauling and right away repair and maintenance in an effort to maintain safe roadways.

6. Removes brush and trees from roadways using hand and power tools.

7. Performs routine mechanical repair and preventative maintenance work to ensure safe and proper working condition of all tools and equipment.

8. Carries signs and performs other lifting and moving of heavy objects and materials.

9. Documents work activities, performs computer data entry and utilizes computer databases.

10. Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.

11. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications

In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess the following:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in the operation of highway construction and/or maintenance equipment
  • Valid CDL - Minnesota Class A driver's license without restrictions
  • Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain with six months of employment
  • Ability to report to work within 45 minutes if necessary
  • Experience using a personal computer

Preferred experience beyond minimum qualifications:

  • Sign school or related vocational training
  • Previous work experience in highway sign creation and placement
  • Snow removal and ice control operations in a road system environment
  • Maintenance Worker with a County, City or State office
  • Vocational training with experience in the operation and maintenance of light construction and maintenance equipment
  • Making minor repairs and adjustments to service equipment
  • Experience in the operation of trucks, tractors and other light automotive equipment

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge of highway sign creation, placement, and installation.

2. Knowledge of Federal and State guidelines relating to traffic control devices.

3. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.

4. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in the use of tools, equipment, and vehicles associated with sign creation, complex construction and maintenance equipment.

5. Ability to interpret engineering plan specifications and survey markings.

6. Ability to operate equipment such as, pneumatic tools, pick-up trucks, and other moderately complex automotive equipment.

7. Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.

8. Ability to maintain a safe work environment.

9. Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

10. Ability to use a personal computer to complete reports and access databases.

11. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

12. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 75% of the time outdoors and 25% indoors. May require frequent travel to offsite work locations. Will have some exposure to health hazards and accidents; requires a moderate level of physical effort. All employees are required to reside within the state of Minnesota. 

Extent of Supervision or Guidance Provided

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent.

Moderate.

None.

Hours of Work

This position has a usual work schedule of 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Summer hours: 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday starting Monday preceding Memorial Day through the Thursday preceding Labor Day.
