Senior Metal Fabricator
SF Metalworks
Colusa, CA | Full-time | $30-$40 per hour
At SF Metalworks, we're a creative fabrication team that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern CNC technology to create high-end custom architectural and decorative metalwork. Our projects include custom furniture, countertops, railings, wine cellars, doors, cabinets, and other complex assemblies.
We're looking for a Senior Metal Fabricator who takes pride in precision, craftsmanship, problem-solving, and helping others develop their skills.
What You'll Do
Precision Fabrication
- Build high-end custom architectural and decorative metalwork using traditional fabrication methods and modern technology.
- Plan layouts and determine appropriate equipment and fabrication methods based on project requirements.
- Work with a variety of metal alloys, including architectural metals and precious metals.
- Set up components to specifications and execute complex, multi-part assemblies.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
- Use precision measuring tools to ensure dimensional accuracy and precise fit-up.
Welding & Equipment
- Perform high-quality TIG and MIG welding. Laser welding experience is a plus.
- Operate production machinery with little to no supervision.
- Safely use and care for fabrication equipment, including saws, shears, drill presses, sanders, and hand tools.
- Operate or quickly learn specialized equipment such as a Bridgeport mill, CNC press brake, and powered angle roller.
- Maintain equipment in safe working condition.
Quality & Problem-Solving
- Inspect welded surfaces and finished assemblies for weld, dimensional, and finish defects.
- Identify production issues and recommend practical solutions to maintain workflow.
- Help ensure finished assemblies meet project specifications and quality standards.
- Solve fabrication challenges independently or collaboratively.
Technical Leadership
- Serve as a technical resource for Journeyman and Apprentice fabricators.
- Provide on-the-job guidance in advanced fabrication techniques and problem-solving.
- Help train team members on the proper use and maintenance of specialized equipment.
- Communicate project progress and contribute to a positive, supportive shop environment.
What You Bring
Required
- 5+ years of experience in fine metal fabrication, particularly architectural metalwork.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong layout and fabrication planning skills.
- Proficiency with TIG and MIG welding.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and welding symbols.
- Experience working with architectural metals and understanding their material properties.
- Strong precision measuring and fit-up skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- High attention to detail in fabrication and finishing.
- Ability to collaborate effectively on complex assemblies.
Preferred
- Technical degree or certification in welding or fabrication.
- Experience with copper-based alloys or precious metals.
- Laser welding experience.
- Experience with CNC press brakes, Bridgeport mills, or powered angle rollers.
- Familiarity with metal patination techniques.
- Experience mentoring or training other fabricators.
Physical Demands & Schedule
This is a hands-on role in a medium industrial fabrication environment where noise levels may be high.
- Ability to repeatedly lift 50-75 lbs.
- Ability to stand and work for extended periods, up to 10 hours per day.
- Ability to walk, stoop, kneel, bend, reach overhead, carry materials, and climb stairs or ladders.
- Ability to safely operate CNC cutting equipment and fabrication machinery.
Monday-Thursday | 5:00 AM-3:30 PM40 hours per week, with occasional overtime as needed.3-day weekends most weeks.
A skills test may be required to determine final placement within the pay range.
Compensation & Benefits
- $30-$40+ per hour, depending on experience
- Monday-Thursday | 5:00 AM-3:30 PM
- Four-day, 10-hour work week
- Overtime may be requested based on production needs
- Primarily shop-floor work with standing for extended periods and lifting up to 35 lbs.
