Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Communications, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and working in close collaboration with the Director, Administration and Operations, Medical Education, the Communications Officer develops communications materials to inform and engage a variety of audiences, with a primary focus on students, faculty and staff within the School of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Officer provides expert advice and support to internal clients, in particular those in the undergraduate medical education and postgraduate medical education programs in the School of Medicine.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of internal clients’ goals, structures and operational challenges; proactively advise on communications, campaigns and channels to meet client needs and to advance University and Faculty goals.
  • Collaborate in the development of communications strategies consistent with University and Faculty goals and priorities; create and implement communications rollouts.
  • Translate complex information, including policies, into engaging and accurate content for students and faculty, through a variety of internal communications channels.
  • Create content across multiple channels, working with Faculty communications staff and clients as needed, to strengthen community and belonging within the School of Medicine, including at Campus Outaouais and across the McGill clinical teaching network.
  • Support key events and collaborate with the School of Medicine and Faculty’s Events officers on large-scale events.
  • Ensure clients’ web presence reflects best practices and latest McGill functionalities; establish and implement standard operating procedures to update key websites, particularly within the School of Medicine, ensuring that content is current and optimized.
  • Liaise with School of Medicine leadership, internal clients, and student leadership, as well as with partners in the Faculty’s network of teaching hospitals and institutes, to monitor audience needs and issues, solicit feedback and collaborate on joint communication initiatives where appropriate.
  • Develop and implement best practices and standard processes to support clients’ communication needs, such as style guides and templates; where appropriate, coach non-communicators developing content to ensure consistency and quality control.
  • Remain current with best practices in communications, particularly internal communications, e-newsletters and digital content; share best practices with other Faculty communicators.   
  • Monitor the effectiveness of communications with key performance indicators; adapt strategies and materials as needed according to best practices.
  • Support special Faculty projects, as needed.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Undergraduate degree in communications or related field. Three (3) years' related experience, or more. Thrives in a complex organizational environment with multiple clients. Ability to anticipate possible difficulties, troubleshoot and implement solutions. Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills.

Fully versed in planning and coordinating communications projects across channels. Strong organizational, priority-setting, problem-solving and listening.

Ability to build relationships with clients / colleagues and to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, changing, deadline-oriented environment.

Demonstrated professionalism and discretion. Proven ability to work with computer applications and tools related to the field of communications (Microsoft Office, web, social media, etc.), as well as databases and presentation software.

English and French, spoken and written is required. Experience working in communications in a medical school and/or healthcare environment a strong asset.
