Worker Type:
Maximum Term/Fixed Term (Fixed Term)Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions though our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. No two days are the same.
We have an exciting opportunity for experienced Senior API Developers to join our Core Ledger Replacement domain and be part of a once-in-a-generation transformation programme. Help build the future of lending at BNZ, delivering modern technology, innovative customer experiences, and lasting impact for New Zealanders.
As a senior member of the team, you will drive the delivery of complex, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions. This is a fixed-term opportunity through to September 2028.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We sat down with the People Leader (who you would report to), and they told us the following about the role:
What are some of the day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?
Deliver Outcomes: Lead the delivery of complex features, systems, or technical initiatives, balancing speed, quality, and alignment with strategic goals. Take responsibility for on-call participation and production support within your domain, helping maintain reliability and respond to incidents effectively.
Demonstrate Technical Excellence: Apply advanced engineering knowledge to design and build robust, scalable systems. Make technical decisions that account for long-term sustainability and operational impact.
Solve Problems: Navigate ambiguity, shape problem definitions, and propose practical, effective solutions. Guide others through problem solving and system design.
Collaborate and Influence: Build strong relationships across disciplines. Influence technical direction through clear communication, structured thinking, and constructive challenge.
Grow Self and Others: Provide technical mentorship and support the growth of others through coaching, feedback, and knowledge sharing. Proactively seek feedback to improve your own effectiveness.
What is the team culture and environment like?
This team operates in a collaborative and supportive environment where knowledge sharing, technical excellence, and continuous improvement are highly valued. Team members work closely together to solve complex problems, contribute ideas, and support each other's professional growth. There is a strong focus on quality, innovation, and delivering outcomes in line with established engineering standards.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
Few opportunities give you the chance to help rebuild the engine room of a bank. Core Ledger Replacement is transforming the technology that sits at the centre of BNZ, moving us from legacy systems to a modern cloud-based core banking platform. The scale is significant and the impact will be felt across the entire organisation. If you're excited by large-scale platform modernisation, enterprise integration, and delivering technology that will shape BNZ's future, we'd love to hear from you.
What technical skills are required for this role?
We’re looking for strong engineering experience, with deep expertise in one or more of these technical domains (Java, Springboot, Rest API’s). You’ll bring a strong track record of leading complex technical work across systems or teams, taking ownership of large-scale features or platforms from design through to deployment, support, and continuous improvement.
What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
You’ll be a strategic problem solver who can make sound trade-offs in ambiguous environments, balancing technical decisions with business outcomes. Just as importantly, you’ll be a clear communicator and collaborative leader who builds trust across teams, supports an inclusive engineering culture, and helps grow others through coaching, mentoring, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
