JOB SUMMARY:

The Co-Op Maintenance Technician position is intended for students currently enrolled in the Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) Industrial Maintenance Certificate or related program.

This role provides hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, allowing students to apply classroom learning in mechanical systems, electrical troubleshooting, control systems, PLCs, and industrial equipment maintenance.

The Co-Op Technician will assist the Maintenance and Engineering teams in maintaining production equipment, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting basic issues, and learning safe, effective repair practices.

DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE

This co-op position is designed to help the student:

• Apply GRCC coursework in a real manufacturing environment
• Build hands-on skills in:
  • Mechanical repair
  • Electrical troubleshooting
  • Industrial systems (pneumatic, hydraulic, PLC)
• Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills
• Prepare for a full-time maintenance / process technician role with Magna Engineered Glass

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist maintenance technicians with preventive maintenance on motors, conveyors, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and production equipment.

• Support troubleshooting activities by:

• Observing machinery in operation

• Identifying abnormal noise, vibration, or performance

• Using basic measuring and testing tools

• Assist in disassembling and reassembling equipment using:

• Hand tools and power tools

• Hoists and lifting devices (with training and supervision)

• Learn to inspect components using measuring tools such as:

• Calipers

• Micrometers

• Gauges

• Assist in making basic mechanical and equipment adjustments under supervision.

• Support basic electrical and control system troubleshooting, consistent with GRCC coursework and safety requirements.

• Follow machine diagrams, manuals, and work instructions to complete assigned tasks.

• Assist in documenting maintenance work, equipment issues, and completed tasks.

• Help maintain equipment uptime by:

• Completing assigned tasks on time

• Communicating issues to maintenance team members

• Assist in keeping tools, parts, and work areas organized and properly stocked.

• Participate in continuous improvement and problem-solving activities.

• Maintain a safe and clean work environment by following all company safety procedures, including lockout/tagout.

• Gain exposure to and assist with:

• PLC systems

• Electrical troubleshooting

• Mechanical power transmission

• Pneumatics and hydraulics

• Perform other related duties as assigned to support learning and team objectives.

REQUIREMENTS: 

• Currently enrolled in, or accepted into, the GRCC Industrial Maintenance Certificate or related program

• Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in industrial equipment and repair

• Willingness to learn:

• Electrical troubleshooting

• Control systems

• PLC basics

• Mechanical systems

• Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision

• Good communication skills (verbal and written)

• Strong work ethic, reliability, and positive attitude

• Ability to work independently on assigned tasks after training

• Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement

PREFERRED (NOT REQUIRED)

• Coursework or exposure to:

• Basic Electricity and Electronics

• Electrical Troubleshooting

• Control Systems / PLCs

• Mechanical Power Transmission

• Any hands-on experience such as:

• Automotive repair

• Farm equipment

• Shop work

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.  The employee is required to obtain a license for operating a hilo, scissor lift, and other industrial equipment as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment sites can be loud.
