The Opportunity  

Our Neuromodulation business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum. For more than 135 years, Abbott has helped people around the world live fuller, healthier lives through the right combination of science and technology. This position works out of our Plano, Texas location in Abbott’s Neuromodulation division, where we develop connected Class III implantable medical-device systems, including spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS), that help people living with chronic pain and movement disorders. We are looking for a hands-on Senior Software Engineer who is energized by building high-quality products, learning new technologies, and taking on unfamiliar challenges. You will develop software across Angular and TypeScript user experiences, C# and .NET mobile and application layers, services and data, and C or C++ device-facing integrations. You will use AI-enabled engineering tools responsibly to increase engineering capacity, improve quality, and accelerate learning while maintaining ownership of every design decision and delivered result. 

What you'll work on

• Build end-to-end product capabilities. Design, implement, and maintain full stack software for connected neuromodulation products using technologies such as Angular, TypeScript, C#, .NET, C, and C++. Deliver capabilities from clinician-facing user experiences through mobile and application services, APIs, data persistence, and device interfaces. 

• Own features through the life cycle. Translate product, system, clinical, and risk-management needs into thoughtful designs and production code. Participate in estimation, design controls, implementation, reviews, integration, verification, release, monitoring, field support, and ongoing maintenance. 

• Build quality into every change. Write clean, secure, maintainable, and observable software for an IEC 62304 Class C environment, supported by effective unit, component, integration, and automated regression coverage. Use code reviews, static analysis, cybersecurity controls, CI/CD feedback, traceability, and risk-based thinking to prevent defects rather than discover them late. 

• Integrate across connected systems. Develop reliable interfaces and data flows across Angular user interfaces, .NET mobile and application components, backend services, embedded devices, firmware, cloud capabilities, and representative hardware or simulated environments. 

• Use AI to increase engineering capacity. Use approved AI copilots, large language models, and agentic workflows to accelerate design exploration, implementation, debugging, documentation, code understanding, and automated verification. Apply these tools to extend your capabilities and help the team deliver better software faster. 

• Apply AI responsibly. Follow Abbott’s Responsible, Safe, Transparent, Fair, and Impactful AI principles and established governance. Protect sensitive information, validate generated code and analyses, preserve traceability, recognize limitations, and maintain meaningful human review and accountability for all outputs. 

• Collaborate to solve meaningful problems. Work as part of a multidisciplinary, cross-functional team spanning software, systems, firmware, hardware, cybersecurity, quality, regulatory, clinical, and product functions. Understand user and system needs, resolve complex integration issues, and deliver solutions that are safe, effective, secure, and reliable. 

• Learn, adapt, and improve. Approach new technologies and challenges with curiosity, humility, and persistence. Share knowledge, seek feedback, improve team practices, and grow your understanding of SCS, DBS, implantable systems, connected medical devices, and regulated software development. 

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, another relevant engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A master’s degree or other advanced education is preferred. 

• 5+ years of professional software development experience delivering reliable applications or connected products. Candidates should demonstrate experience using AI-enabled development tools, or a strong passion for learning to use them effectively and responsibly, to increase engineering capacity and software quality. 

• Hands-on full stack development experience with C#, .NET, Angular, TypeScript or JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, including user-interface architecture, application services, APIs, data persistence, and integration between software components. Experience with Android or iOS development and touch-based user interfaces is strongly desired. 

• Working knowledge of one or more additional languages such as C, C++, Java, or Python for embedded integration, native mobile development, engineering tools, or troubleshooting across software and hardware boundaries. 

• Demonstrated foundation in computer science, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, modular architecture, design patterns, debugging, multithreading or asynchronous programming, secure coding, and maintainable software design. 

• Experience delivering complex algorithms and product features on mobile or connected platforms using RESTful or gRPC services, protocol-based interfaces, relational or embedded databases, Git, and automated build and deployment pipelines. 

• Experience with requirements analysis, technical design and documentation, Agile or Scrum development, automated verification, peer reviews, CI/CD practices, observability, traceability, and disciplined investigation and correction of defects. 

Preferred Qualifications

• A passion for innovation, continuous learning, taking on new challenges, and applying technology to meaningful healthcare problems. 

• Experience developing software for Class III medical devices, Software as a Medical Device, digital health products, active implantable systems, or other regulated, safety-critical, or high-reliability products. 

• Experience with SCS, DBS, neuromodulation, Bluetooth Low Energy, connectivity, sensors, sensor fusion, embedded systems, device simulators, cloud services, or hardware-in-the-loop environments. 

• Familiarity with IEC 62304 Class C software development, ISO 14971 risk management, ISO 13485, FDA design controls, security architecture, authentication, cybersecurity expectations, requirements traceability, and verification evidence. Strong communication, analytical problem-solving, and the ability to contribute independently and collaboratively across multiple priorities are also valued.

$78,000.00 – $156,000.00
