With little or no supervision, the master-level (Utility Service Technician IV) will perform assigned and assessed maintenance, preventive maintenance and advanced mechanical / electrical / hydraulic / drive train / suspension & steering / brakes / heating & air conditioning, gasoline & diesel engine repairs of complex utility vehicles and their attachments and accessories, both in-shop/at-branch and occasional field service calls, in a safe and professional manner. Must be able to effectively perform all duties of lower-level technicians. This position may specialize in the repair and maintenance of a specific category of utility vehicles and attachments that requires an employee to possess a high degree of independent judgement and creative thinking.

What you'll do:

  • Using high degree of independent judgment, responsible for the safe maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair and testing of a variety of complex rental vehicles, their attachments & accessories, equipment, and tools at branch or on customer locations involving mechanical / electrical / hydraulic / drive train / suspension & steering / brakes / heating & air conditioning, gasoline & diesel engines, utility attachment booms, cables, insulation sections, insulated bucket liners and controls:
  • Using high degree of independent judgment, responsible for the safe maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair and testing of a variety of complex rental vehicles, their attachments & accessories, equipment, and tools at branch or on customer locations involving mechanical / electrical / hydraulic / drive train / suspension & steering / brakes / heating & air conditioning, gasoline & diesel engines, utility attachment booms, cables, insulation sections, insulated bucket liners and controls:
  • Ability to diagnose and repair all equipment vehicles and their utility attachments within the rental fleet appropriately and consistently, utilizing schematics, diagnostic programs, tools and applications without supervision.
  • Consistently utilize diagnostic software and technical manuals to identify malfunctions and determine the best course of action.
  • Consistently utilize URI Tools and Applications to perform all necessary diagnostic and documentation functions on the company computer system
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex issues within hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and braking systems.
  • Installation, fabrication, removal and repair of different types of truck bodies, truck suspensions & equipment.
  • After achieving a “Qualified Person” for DC Dielectric Testing and/or “Certification from (ASE- T2-T8) or (FMCSA- EPA-609) for annual vehicle DOT Inspections, conduct routine DOT inspections, dielectric compliance testing, and preventative maintenance to maximize performance and meet ANSI/OSHA safety standards
  • Perform welding and fabrication for equipment repair and modification as needed.
  •  As assigned supervise, train and organize the work duties of other technicians in the department.
  • Consistently manage field service vehicle Parts Inventory to ensure proper levels and compliance
  • Maintain ability for business/after-hours service calls, customer requested needs, and be available when assigned
  • Advise customer and/or field service leader of any repairs, maintenance or services that should/must be performed within the next 3 months. 
  • Consistently utilize URI Tools to maintain paperwork/electronic documentation of work performed (work orders) in a complete and timely manner on a daily/job basis:
  • Record preventative and ready inspection completion in Rentalman system\
  • Document parts and labor accurately within Rentalman
  • When required, travel to customer site for repair/maintenance of rental or owned equipment or vehicles:
  • Maintain a service vehicle in a clean and professional manner.
  • Consistently utilize URI Tools to document, assign, perform and complete the Customer Service Request (i.e. FSD Screen, FS Tech Application)
  • May assist in the pick-up and delivery of equipment and parts to and from outside vendors and other United Rentals, Inc. locations for purchase and/or repair
  • When necessary and without supervision, and utilizing the correct URI Tools and Processes, accurately order needed parts using reference materials as required, including communication with all necessary vendors and suppliers
  • Training & Development
  • Attend assigned manufacturer sponsored training classes
  • Complete all required URI Workday training classes (including FSD and FST training)
  • Advanced and multi-day training and travel may be required
  • Ensure all certifications are kept active and up-to-date
     

Requirements:

  •  High School diploma or equivalent
  •  Manufacturer sponsored training a plus
  •  Trade school training preferred
  •  Active applicable state class driver’s license
  •  Certified welding and fabrication
  • Must hold valid Class 5 valid driver’s license; Class 1 or 3 preferred
  • Medical card as required by the FMCSA.
  • 5+ years working with aerial lifts, bucket trucks, hydraulic systems, or heavy equipment (e.g., utility trucks, forestry equipment, or construction machinery)
  • Previous welding and fabrication experience required
  • Related truck & utility maintenance /equipment rental experience required
  • CVIP (Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program) or (ASE Certifications) experience preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and technical ability are a must

Working Conditions

  • Activities requiring handling and grasping with the hands when performing repairs or maintenance of equipment by utilizing hand tools, power tools, air tools, nuts, bolts, electronic controls, and other small parts.

  • Occasional use of foot/feet to operate foot pedal on equipment and vehicles to test operation

  • Frequent lifting up to 45 lbs.

  • Exposure to bright light, extreme temperature, loud noise, dust, gas, or fumes

  • Work in unprotected weather elements

  • Ability to wear a respirator and/or hearing protection as required

  • Ability to bend, kneel, and work with arms raised for prolonged periods of time

  • Ability to walk and stand on concrete and uneven surfaces for at least 4 hours per day

  • Ability to climb over and into heavy equipment and vehicles several times per day
